Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "Communication is the part of the treatment"

Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine held an "Intern Doctor Orientation Program". In the program, students who took a step towards becoming the first intern doctor of the Faculty of Medicine were informed about the new semester. The opening conference of the program was given by President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan under the title of "Clinical Communication". Tarhan gave golden advice to the students. Emphasizing that being able to understand and read the patient is the beginning of a healthy communication, Tarhan pointed out that it is important to be a healthy, safe and active listener when communicating with the patient. Noting that communication should be seen as a part of the treatment, Tarhan stated that "There is a secret agreement between me and the patient that says, 'If you listen to me, I will listen to you.' In other words, we must be willing and willing to understand."

The program, which was held at Üsküdar University Health Campus İbn-i Sina Auditorium, received great attention

The opening speeches of the orientation program, which was attended by the first interns of Üsküdar Medicine, were made by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Haydar Sur, and the Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak. The opening conference of the program was given by President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan. Academicians from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences also participated in the program.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "The beginning of communication is healthy thinking"

In his conference titled "Clinical Communication", Prof. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that being able to understand and read the patient is the beginning of a healthy communication. Tarhan stated that "How have 5 years passed, right? Imagine that 5 years are passing... 2 years will pass immediately. The important thing is to spend the time well and efficiently. When starting intern medicine, of course, you will also start touching the patient. You will be a good observer. In the clinics you will go to, you will visit all branches in groups such as five, six, three groups. As you walk around with these, you will see cases where you put theoretical knowledge into practice. Those cases are the best teachers. We learn everything from patients. As you know, the guidance of the teachers there is absolutely important to read the patient well and understand them well. In other words, this is very closely related to receiving information and information transfer. How will this happen? Right now, the beginning of secure communication in the world is healthy thinking, being able to think safely in thought, being able to think correctly."

"See communication as an investment item"

Tarhan, who was followed carefully by medical students, drew attention to individuals who see the time allocated to communication as lost time, and underlined that if there is no communication, the effort is wasted. Tarhan expressed that "Communication is the basis of the responsibility for treatment, the prerequisite for the peace of mind of the health worker is here. We can call this the use of emotional intelligence for treatment. There are variables in communication. It is important to look at cases and situations on the axis of right and wrong, it is not because whether ‘I liked or disliked’. Acting with reason, not feeling. We see the time allocated to communication as lost time. It is said that 'I do not have that much time, I do not have time to tell you.’ However, that is not a loss. See communication as an investment item. Because if you cannot communicate properly, your work is wasted. The other party does not understand, and the effort is wasted. For all processes, it is necessary to make it a reflex to ask 3 questions. 'Is there healthy communication? Is it measured or am I measuring? Did I or did no? Can I treat them?' In other words, can I learn from that communication mistake and improve it? We need to ask that. It is important to closely monitor the rapid change direction of culture, way of doing business, corporate culture and professional culture, not values."

"It is important to be an active listener"

Pointing out that it is necessary to be willing and intentional to understand, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan mentioned that if one is not listened to, the reason for the behaviors can be missed. Tarhan stated that "The therapeutic relationship starts from the moment the healthcare worker and the patient first meet. The key word is the best interest of the patient. Therefore, I will satisfy my professional ego here. ‘I will do this, I will do that’. However, you will act ethically if it is in the best interest of the patient. It also causes healthy communication for that patient. If there is a priority in your mind map, which we call 'mindset', and the best interests of the patient, this is reflected in your language and behavior. It is an effort by the other party as it is seen as this person wants to help me. The opponent approach to the judiciary is minimalized. For this reason, it definitely takes practice and if we give this to our 'mindset' mind map, we make fewer mistakes. When he comes with the patient, we actually make a secret agreement. There is a secret agreement that says, 'If you listen to me, I will listen to you.' The other party must be willing to eliminate anxiety and understand. Not listening is dangerous because you miss the reason for the behavior. That is, we must be willing to understand. The feeling of 'I care what happens to you, and your life matters'. In such a case, being able to give it means listening, responsibility and respect. Being an active listener is important for this. Patients who come in say, 'I need your knowledge set, I accept your leadership.' Both sides need your professional knowledge and your knowledge of the diagnosis in the hospital. See communication as part of the treatment..."

“Emotional leadership and psychological superiority should be in the therapist."

Tarhan shared important professional information for physicians and emphasized that clinical intelligence and emotional leadership are important in medicine. Tarhan stated that "There are patients who complain all the time They are like narcist, snobbish people. As soon as you walk in the door, they immediately blame you. There are also manic and cheerful patients. They are quiet, and you cannot get words out of their mouth. Patients with four seasons in one day... Depending on the type of disorders, the approach of the physician changes. This is a situation that will be acquired with skill over the years. For this reason, no matter which of the patient groups comes from in relationships, you should have the emotional leadership. If you get upset because the patient's face is upset, you will lose the leadership at that moment. The patient came in extremely cheerful. If you act like them, you will lose the leadership at that moment, but emotional leadership and psychological superiority should be in the doctor. There needs to be clinical intelligence here. This is for his benefit, otherwise time will be wasted. Evidence-based persuasion is an important element of modern medical practice. When persuasion is not involved, it may be impossible to respect the privacy of patients. Doctors who use persuasion must make sure to pass six criteria. It is to remove a prejudice, to reach the patient's specific wishes, to provide honest, objective, evidence-based information about the possible harms or benefits."

Prof. Hikmet Koçak: "Being a doctor is not a profession you can do without love for people"

In his speech, Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak pointed out that empathy is very important in medicine and stated that "Today is an important day for us as a university as well as for you. As the first students of our medical faculty, which we have been excited about since the first day, we wanted and expected you to be an intern. In fact, since the day you were accepted to medical school, you were always wondering when you would make your first contact with the patient and when you would put on the white coat. Starting today, you have put on this white coat, and you are starting the most important point of your life professionally. The important point is that once you deal with the patient directly, you will contact them, you will examine them. Being a doctor is a lifestyle that is ahead of the profession. It is not a profession that you can do without love for people. That is why you are going to love people, and you love them anyway. And second, do not forget about empathy. From time to time, put ourselves in the patient's shoes. If you are a patient, be sure to empathize with what kind of service you would like to receive and how you would like to be greeted and act accordingly."

Prof. Haydar Sur: "To be a professional is to feel that the responsibility is on us a little more"

Mentioning that he lived one of the historical days of his life, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Haydar Sur stated that "You are our students, but now you are our colleagues. This is very meaningful, and I am living one of the historical days of my life. We established this faculty together. We have put forward all the developments together, discussing such cornerstones together, discussing with you, and discussing with the senior management. We are about to put the last piece of the shape, that is, the lego pieces. It is a matter of interns... Because it is a transition period from being a student to being a professional and it is very important. In my view, being a professional means feeling that the responsibility is on us a little more. Pay attention to the word 'internalize' in English, what does it mean? It has meanings such as to include and incorporate. It has now included you in the medical profession. When we say intern, it is the effect of word 'internalize'. Also, there is no exam anymore, and we only have colleagues as brothers and sisters as teachers. They are your masters. The sweetest thing in the world is to get a physician's diploma for a physician candidate. On that day, you will also take on the responsibility of being a physician. As long as you balance your joys and responsibilities, you will be very successful physicians, I am sure of that."

Prof. Mehmet Şirin Aksu gave a speech titled "Information about the Intern Program and Intern Report Card Presentation".

Within the scope of the program, students were informed, and questions were answered.
