He was born in İstanbul in 1974. After graduating from Kabataş High School, he completed his undergraduate education at Marmara University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Journalism in 1996. After working in the news services of Sabah, Hürriyet and Star Newspapers, he was transferred to Milliyet Newspaper in 2003, where he still works. Karakaş, whose main task in Milliyet Newspaper is to follow the President and the Prime Minister to evaluate daily events and to produce special news, completed his 20th year of his profession in 2014 and received his permanent press card. Karakaş, who follows the events that took place in various cities of Türkiye such as the meteor fall in Bingöl, the Manisa-Soma mine disaster, the Artvin-Hopa flood disaster, and the refugee camp in İzmir-Dikili, on behalf of his institution, participates in interviews and conferences on journalism at various universities and high schools. Karakaş, who is closely interested in trainee reporters in order to emphasize the importance of academic education in journalism, met the underwater and marine world while reporting current and social events and conveying them to the public with his photographs as part of his profession. Gökhan Gültekin Karakaş has been diving in various parts of Türkiye for 15 years and is interested in underwater photography. It meets with scientists, non-governmental organizations, academics and bureaucrats to disseminate marine culture and protect underwater life. Karakaş, who is the only civilian on the TCG Gediz frigate during his trip to Japan, which is one of the longest cruises of the Turkish Navy (Ertuğrul Martyrs Commemoration-2015), also develops himself on the subject of such as the Antarctic continent, global warming, Eurasia, Russia and China policies.
