Between 1982 and 1986, she studied at Marmara University, Atatürk Education Faculty Graphics Department. After graduating from ITU Institute of Social Sciences English Master's Program in 1989, she received various trainings on cartoon production in England between 1989-1994. In 1994, she worked as 'Inbetweener' at Amblin Studio, the UK division of Universal Studios. During these years, Akören's work was awarded the animation screening award on Channel Four's 'ITV Motor Mouth' program and was included in the MOMI Museum's 'Young Animators' selection list.
