RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
1. Research Strategy and Objectives
The Faculty of Communication’s research strategy and objectives are planned in alignment with the strategies and objectives set forth in Üsküdar University’s 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, based on the following principles:
- Planning aimed at activating and utilizing information resources with the highest level of performance,
- Recognizing that the university is an environment for generating and disseminating knowledge, the Faculty of Communication particularly aims to effectively use information resources in the field of communication, conduct research, and share the knowledge produced with stakeholders and the public, thereby contributing to the development of the media sector, the field of communication sciences, and societal progress,
- Exploring methods and means to foster and institutionalize a culture of knowledge production, research and development, and creativity,
- Establishing a research and development approach that supports the cultivation of inquisitive, reflective, and productive individuals,
- Ensuring the correct and efficient use of resources to help transform Üsküdar University and the Faculty of Communication into a hub of knowledge production.
In line with these strategies, the Faculty of Communication has defined the following research and development objectives:
- To make the Faculty of Communication a nationally and internationally recognized center for knowledge production,
- To conduct communication research at both national and international levels within the Faculty of Communication,
- To transform the Faculty of Communication into a research and development center where resources are used effectively,
- To turn the Faculty of Communication into a center for patented studies in the field of communication,
- To elevate the Faculty of Communication to a prominent R&D center on the international stage,
- Through collaboration with the media sector, to make the Faculty of Communication an environment that organizes comprehensive scientific meetings on how media operates in Türkiye and worldwide and converts these meetings into scientific publications.
- Establishing a research and development process in which R&D outputs are shared with relevant public audiences and shape the agenda,
- Ensuring the active participation of students in research and development processes, thereby cultivating individuals who are curious about and inclined toward R&D,
- Drawing significant attention from both domestic and international audiences through academic studies carried out at the Faculty of Communication.
1.1. Research Resources
The Faculty of Communication is in a robust position in terms of research resources. The university’s ARGEYEP unit regularly provides training to academics and students on research resources and methods, fostering a culture of research and development. if-faaliyet-raporu-2023-2024-1.pdf (uskudar.edu.tr).
Additionally, the Human-Centered Research and Application Center (İLİMER) operational under the coordination of faculty members of the Faculty of Communication serves as an important umbrella for carrying out research and development initiatives.
The Faculty of Communication’s computer laboratories, library, filming studio, and editing/montage unit are also recognized as key physical environments and knowledge-production resources for R&D activities.
1.2. Monitoring and Improving Research Performance
In order to maintain high-performance research and development activities—continuously and closely monitored—the Faculty of Communication, which boasts a strong academic staff, master’s programs, master’s thesis work, and student clubs, has established an ARGEYEP Unit Coordinatorship. This unit works in coordination with the university’s main ARGEYEP body. Through this coordinatorship, continuous research and project training is provided to faculty members and students, and they are encouraged to develop new projects. 1.3. 2023–2024 R&D Performance of the Faculty of Communication
Among the research and development activities carried out by the Faculty of Communication during the 2023–2024 academic year are:
- The Faculty of Communication Academic Journal, Etkileşim (a national, peer-reviewed journal), published twice a year (April and October) in both Turkish and English. It continues its publication both as an e-version and in printed form. Etkileşim, which is indexed in the international directories DOAJ and EBSCO, has also been indexed in TR Dizin since 2021.

• Within the Faculty of Communication, numerous scientific publications (books, articles, and papers) were produced during the 2023–2024 academic year. if-faaliyet-raporu-2023-2024-1.pdf
• Various awards received by students of the Faculty of Communication in the 2023–2024 academic year for the products they created as part of their applied education also demonstrate the ongoing development of the faculty’s research and development capacity. • The scientific meetings held annually by the Faculty of Communication highlight the faculty’s growing strength in research and development. Furthermore, the symposiums planned for the 2024–2025 academic year in collaboration with Portugal’s UTAD University and Baku State University will advance the faculty’s international recognition.
