Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, for which I have been appointed as the dean in April 2023, began to give education in 2013-2014 academic year with three departments consisting of Communication Sciences, Radio-Television and Cinema and New Media. In a short period of 10 years, under the leadership of former dean Prof. Nazife Güngör, it has managed to gain a good place among the communication faculties with the quality education it has given and the academic studies it has made.
As of today, we have 1940 students in 7 departments at the faculty: Cartoon and Animation, Journalism, Visual Communication Design, Public Relations and Publicity, Radio-Television and Cinema, Advertising, New Media and Communication. We are planning to add new departments in the next academic year.
As Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, we strive to provide an education that considers the balance of theory and practice, and to improve the quality of our education every year. We have already documented the quality of our education with the accreditations we have received from ILAD (Communication Research Association). Until today, our Journalism, Visual Communication Design and Advertising programs have been accredited by ILAD. Public Relations and Publicity, and Radio, Television and Cinema programs have already entered accreditation processes as well.
Our academic staff grows stronger every year. As of April 2023, there are 4 full-time professors, 14 associate professors, 12 doctoral faculty members and 12 research assistants in our academic staff. There will be new additions to our academic staff in a short time. In addition, many professionals from the sector continue to teach practical courses as part-time teaching staff.
As Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, we have proven the quality of our education with the awards our students have received so far. Our students received 2 awards, one second and one third place in the 29th Aydın Doğan Young Communicators Competition; 4 awards, one first place, two second places and one third place in the 30th Young Communicators Competition; 4 awards, one first place and three second places in the 31st Young Communicators Competition; 7 awards, one first place, four second places and two third places in the 32nd Young Communicators Competition. They have won 4 awards, two first and two second prizes from the TRT Future Communicators Competition (2020 and 2022). Our students continue to participate in these competitions with more and more works each year.
To equip our students with the knowledge, skills and competencies in line with the expectations of the sectors, we have practice units and laboratories equipped with the latest technology such as a television studio, radio studio, computer laboratories, news workshop, advertising workshop, and design workshop. Haberuskudar.com, which belongs to our Journalism department, is among the best student news websites.
With the education we provide at the Faculty of Communication, our students have a solid intellectual background. We aim to enable them to gain an analytical and critical perspective. Because only a communicator who questions from a critical point of view can be a good citizen of his/her country.
Communication education, of course, cannot be confined to university campuses. As Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, we take care to provide training in cooperation with the communication sectors. Our students gain experience by doing both compulsory and voluntary internships in media organizations, social media sectors, advertising agencies, public relations
companies, graphic design and animation companies, and they take firm steps towards the future.
As the Faculty of Communication, we attach great importance to international cooperation and exchange programs such as Erasmus. We encourage both our academics and students to participate in exchange programs. We continue to host students and faculty members from international universities with which we have an Erasmus agreement.
As Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, we are proud of our academic journal Etkileşim, which we have been publishing for several years, and of our academic conference International Communication Days, which we will organize for the tenth time in 2023. In its fifth year, our journal has been included in the TR Directory and has become one of the preferred journals in the field. Our international conference, which is held as a declaration, has become a brand in the field with an increasing number of applications every year.
In short, as Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, we are focused on doing our job in the best way and raising good communicators.
