" Turkish Cinematheque Talk" organized by Üsküdar University Radio, Television and Cinema Department was held at the Communication Faculty Fuat Sezgin Conference Hall.
The guest of the program was Jak Şalom, who was the first registered member of the Turkish Cinematheque Association and had the number 1 member ID card, and worked professionally at the Turkish Cinematheque Association between 1966-1972 and at the French Cinematheque between 1972-1977.

At the same time, Jak Shalom gave information to the audience about cinema culture and film collection from past to present.
Mentioning what the Cinematheque is, Şalom said that we should see the Cinematheque as a museum, and that the Cinematheque is like a painting museum or a sculpture museum. He added that the word "Cinematheque" means "Cinema House".
“It advocates a cinema that has an artistic aspect, not a commercial aspect”
Talking about the purpose of the Cinematheque Association, Şalom said that today the cinemas work for commercial purposes and they no longer follow the old artistic concerns. He said that the Cinematheque Association is defending a cinema in which the artistic side of the cinema predominates, not the commercial one.
“One cannot become a novelist without reading a novel, and a filmmaker without watching a film”
Saying that every job requires a certain skill and experience, Şalom said, “Just as a person who has never read a novel in his life cannot become a novelist, one cannot become a filmmaker without watching a movie. The rich cruise experience provides you with savings”.
“Cinematheques are collection houses”
Saying that Cinematheques emerged as a result of accumulation, Şalom stated that their contents include not only films, but also symbolic examples such as film archives, film photographs, clothing related to films, and scripts. He added that all of these were brought together and preserved over long periods of time.
“If you want to enjoy the movie, watch the movie at the cinema”
Saying that watching movies used to be a technique that required mastery, Şalom said that these techniques are gradually disappearing today, and that everyone watches movies on their mobile phones instead of going to the cinema to watch movies, and in the end, there is no pleasure. Providing concrete examples in the continuation of his words, Şalom said, “If you want to enjoy the Mona Lisa, you have to go and see it in France, you cannot get pleasure by seeing its photo on the phone screen. In the same way, if you want to enjoy the movie, you have to watch the movie in the cinema.”
Touching on the re-establishment of the Cinematheque Association, Şalom gave information about the building under construction and the planned works.
“We want filmmakers to own this structure”
Stating that the cinema is a cultural heritage that should be protected, Şalom said that the building, which is under construction, is open to everyone and every activity. He especially wanted filmmakers to protect this structure and to pass it on to future generations.
