Forensic Science (Turkish) - About

Program Overview

Forensic Sciences includes all technic applications of scientific principles and methods in the examination or evaluation of evidence obtained during forensic or administrative investigations. The Forensic Science undergraduate is an interdisciplinary collaboration among academic units relevant to forensic science.

The success of preventing or clarifying all kinds of crimes such as terrorism, human trafficking, child abuse, cybercrime, illegal drug or arms trafficking, bribery, forgery or many others depends on the presence of qualified manpower working in the field of forensic sciences. In addition, it is directly connected to crime scene investigation in international standards and afterwards the analysis of the evidence collected from the crime scene or from the victim, suspect and witness by using modern information and technologies.

On the other hand in today's world, where criminals and crime have no borders, technological developments are closely followed by illegal forces as well as professionals who work in the field of forensic sciences. Forensic science professionals should be trained not only to transfer knowledge and technology from developed countries, but also to develop new equipment, methods and technologies for patenting and saving our country from foreign dependency.

Evidence collection and examination carried out in order to assist justice services require the correct evaluation and interpretation of the results obtained besides technical support. Proving the crime in a timely manner by evaluating the evidence obtained and reaching the real criminal is a human right for the victim and their relatives as well as for the criminal.

Evidence is not only biological origin such as blood, urine, sperm, bone but also offers a great variety such as written/printed documents, drug substance/precursors, explosive substance residues, fingerprints or shoe prints, firearms/shot residues, glass, paint, soil, fiber  or sound/video recordings. Due to this wide range of diversity, almost all fields of health, life and social sciences are used in the collection, analysis and evaluation of evidence.

Forensic Sciences Program Content

In Turkey, as in all developed countries, we aim to provide undergraduate education for young people who will work in private or official criminal laboratories, carry out scientific research, develop new methods or equipment and put them into practice, by using the content shaped for this field of science. The transformation of our private or official expertise institutions and criminal laboratories into well-known, trusted, technology exporting and pioneering organizations in Europe and the world depends on this.

It is a well-known fact that the evidence obtained from the crime scene should be sent to the laboratories by mail or courier, since there are no criminal laboratories in every corner of our country.

It is very important to analyze all evidence, especially biological evidence, at the place where it was collected or in laboratories very close to it, in order to obtain reliable results and to eliminate the differences between laboratories. So much so that, developed countries are trying to benefit from tools and equipment that can examine evidence at the crime scene rather than taken to the laboratory.

Undergraduate education in the field of Forensic Sciences will generate graduates who can think interdisciplinary, have a strong and reliable scientific foundation, have a solid laboratory experience and carry the expertise to the future by developing new products and technologies in this field.

Thanks to the trained graduates, who would be competent analyzing a wide range of evidence, our quality assurance and society's belief in justice will increase.

In line with our goals to be an international leader in Forensic Science education, to produce graduates who will be future leaders in Forensic Science, to improve academic excellence with a balanced emphasis on teaching-research and service, and to increase public awareness of science through Forensic Science education, we aim to provide our students with a rich educational experience along with a practical approach to forensic science education that will enable them to achieve high levels of intellectual achievement and personal growth.

The Forensic Science Program will provide open, welcoming, creative and adaptive teaching-research environments for its students, staff and faculty. Program outcomes will have a positive impact on the forensic science and law enforcement communities and society as a whole.
