INSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION

1. ABOUT US

FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION

Communication, which holds a central importance in every aspect of human and social life, is also observed to be taking on the role of the driving force behind social change and transformation, in parallel with developments in information technologies. In our world, which is living through the information age, the fact that communication plays a leading role not only in shaping the present but also the future demonstrates how important and necessary communication education is.

Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication has also taken on the task of training qualified communication professionals through its well-trained, qualified academic staff, its physical facilities equipped with the latest technology, and its education program that lives up to its mission and vision.

The communication education provided at Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication has both a scientific and an artistic character. While the Faculty of Communication trains journalists, television professionals, filmmakers, and new media professionals for the media sector, it also trains experts with a strong artistic orientation in fields such as animation, visual design, and digital design. Fields included within communication education, such as advertising and public relations, are also related both to the scientific dimension of communication and to its artistic and design dimension.

DEPARTMENTS OF THE FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION

Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication began education in the 2013–2014 academic year with three departments: Communication Sciences, Advertising Design and Communication, and New Media. Today it continues education with eight departments: Animation, Journalism, Visual Communication Design, Public Relations and Publicity, Radio, Television and Cinema, Advertising, New Media and Communication, and New Media and Communication (English).

EDUCATION AT THE FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION

Education at Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication is completed in a total of five years: one optional year of English preparatory education plus four years of undergraduate study. Students who do not wish to take the English preparatory program complete their undergraduate education in four years. However, it should not be forgotten that we live in a globalizing world, and as in other professions, knowing at least one foreign language has become a necessity in the communication profession as well. In particular, having a good command of English is of serious importance for those who choose communication as a profession in terms of being able to sustain their careers. For this reason, we strongly recommend that students who cannot actively use English begin their education with our university's English Preparatory Class, which is offered at a fairly qualified level.

Aside from the English preparatory program, the curriculum applied in the four-year undergraduate program at Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication has been prepared so that students acquire both a solid intellectual foundation and the professional knowledge base required. In the first two years of undergraduate education at the Faculty, general scientific foundation courses are given priority, while in the following two years, priority is given to the professional courses required by the student's department. Thus, by the end of the four years, the student possesses both a solid intellectual formation and the professional knowledge and equipment required in the field of communication.

2. FACULTY/INSTITUTE/VOCATIONAL SCHOOL MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE AND OPERATION

1. STRUCTURE OF THE MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE UNITS

The Faculty of Communication Management System has been structured in accordance with the Regulation on Academic Organization at Universities, which regulates the academic organization, operation, duties, powers, and responsibilities of university units foreseen in Higher Education Law No. 2547, as well as the relationships between subordinate and superior units. Accordingly:

DEAN

The Dean, as the representative and manager of the academic and administrative units of the Faculty, is responsible for the execution of all academic and administrative affairs at the Faculty. The Dean is appointed pursuant to the relevant provisions of Law No. 2547. The Dean's duties, powers, and responsibilities are likewise determined by the relevant provisions of Law No. 2547.

FACULTY BOARD

The Faculty Board consists of the Dean as chair, three professor representatives, two associate professor representatives, and one assistant professor representative — selected by faculty members of the relevant titles from among themselves — together with the heads of departments. Care is taken to ensure that professor, associate professor, and assistant professor representatives serving on the Faculty Board are primarily selected from among full-time faculty members; if there are not enough faculty members of the relevant titles within the Faculty's own staff, representative faculty members may also be elected to the Faculty Board from other faculties of the university. The Faculty Secretary also attends Faculty Board meetings as rapporteur.

The operation of the Faculty Board is likewise determined by the relevant provisions of Law No. 2547.

FACULTY ADMINISTRATIVE BOARD

As determined by the relevant provisions of Law No. 2547, the Faculty Administrative Board consists of the Dean as chair, together with three professor representatives, two associate professor representatives, and one assistant professor representative, selected by faculty members of the same title from among themselves and submitted for approval by the Faculty Board. The Faculty Secretary also attends Faculty Administrative Board meetings as rapporteur. The operation of the Faculty Administrative Board is likewise determined by the relevant provisions of Law No. 2547.

DEPARTMENT CHAIRS

There are seven active departments within the Faculty of Communication. Department chairs are responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and taking precautionary measures regarding every aspect of the department's education process. Department chairs, who preside over department councils, are responsible — within those councils — for developing curricula, developing course schedules, formulating faculty staffing requests, and coordinating education in cooperation with the department's internal and external stakeholders. The duties, powers, and responsibilities of department chairs are likewise determined by the relevant provisions of Law No. 2547.

FACULTY SECRETARY

Overseeing every type of academic and administrative process within the Faculty, acting as rapporteur at Faculty Administrative Board and Faculty Board meetings, and maintaining coordination with the university's Student Affairs Directorate and other administrative units regarding education and the Faculty's physical conditions fall within the duties, powers, and responsibilities of the Faculty Secretary.

DEPUTY FACULTY SECRETARY

Assists the Faculty Secretary in maintaining all types of academic and administrative processes within the Faculty.

COMMITTEES

Various committees and coordinatorships have been established within the Faculty in order to reinforce the duties, powers, and responsibilities of the Dean, the Faculty Administrative Board, the Faculty Board, and the department chairs, to accelerate workflow within the Faculty, and to distribute duties, powers, and responsibilities. These include, among others, the Education Committee, the Applied Education Committee, the Internship Committee, the Bologna Committee, the Erasmus Coordinatorship, the International Student Coordinatorship, the Promotion Coordinatorship, the Project Coordinatorship, and the Web Officers Committee.

2. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES

The Faculty of Communication works in coordination with the university's relevant administrative units and the Quality Board in order to guarantee the planned, programmed, and efficient use of human resources, financial resources, and all types of movable and immovable equipment and tools in all work, research, and development activities carried out within the Faculty.

3. INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The Faculty of Communication's information management system operates on the basis of an accessibility-oriented approach. Faculty activities, announcements directed at students, all types of news, and information related to internal and external evaluation processes are provided on the Faculty website. Information sharing with students as well as with internal and external stakeholders is carried out — with due regard to the confidentiality of private information — through channels that allow access to information, such as the Student Information System (OBS), the Bologna Information System (BBS), the Student Communication System (STİX), and the Learning Management System (ALMS). The information management system operates under the supervision of the university's Information Technologies Directorate. In addition, the Learning Management System (ALMS), which was established with the transition to online education during the pandemic, is also managed and supervised in cooperation with the university's Information Technologies Directorate and the Distance Education Coordinatorship.

4. QUALITY OF SERVICES PROCURED FROM OUTSIDE THE INSTITUTION

The procurement of external services is planned and implemented by the relevant units of the university. The university's relevant directorates carry out the necessary procurement of outside services through a process in which request forms submitted by the Faculty Dean, the department chair requesting the service, faculty members, and other Faculty staff — via the Electronic Document and Archive Management System (EBYS) — are forwarded to and evaluated by University Management and the relevant administrative unit.

5. INFORMING THE PUBLIC

All types of events, meetings, and actions and processes directed at informing internal and external stakeholders at the Faculty of Communication are accessible via the Faculty website.

6. EFFECTIVENESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY OF MANAGEMENT

All work produced and all processes related to education at the Faculty of Communication are discussed at the university's relevant units (administrative directorates, the university senate, the university administrative board, etc.); employee feedback on the Faculty's operations is also collected and evaluated through employee satisfaction surveys. In addition, student satisfaction surveys and Solution Center data should also be regarded as important sources of feedback and work evaluation in terms of the Faculty's effectiveness and accountability.
