Scope
For eight weeks, Prof. Dr. Reşat Öngören will focus on the relationship between God–Universe–Human and, within this framework, will discuss the following topics from a Sufi perspective: “Categories of Existence and Becoming,” “Tawhid and Pantheism,” “Prophethood and Deism,” “Knowledge of Truth: Revelation and Inspiration,” “The Perfect Human: The Vicegerent,” “Necessity and Destiny,” and “Human and Nature.”
Who is Prof. Dr. Reşat Öngören?
Prof. Dr. Reşat Öngören was born in 1963 in Ünye. He graduated from the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University in 1988. He completed his Master’s degree in 1990 and his PhD in 1996 in the Department of History of Sufism at the Institute of Social Sciences of the same university. Between 1996 and 2000, he worked as a Sufism researcher at the Center for Islamic Studies (İSAM) of the Turkish Religious Foundation. In January 2001, he was appointed Assistant Professor at Istanbul University Faculty of Theology. He became Associate Professor in November 2001 and Professor in November 2007. He served as a visiting lecturer at the Sofia Higher Islamic Institute during the 2004–2005 and 2005–2006 academic years.
Prof. Öngören has published numerous articles, papers, encyclopedia entries, and book chapters in his field. His books include Sufism in the Ottoman Empire: Sufis, the State, and the Scholars in Anatolia (Istanbul 2000, 2003, 2012, 2016) and The Zeynîs: An Intellectual Sufi Order in History ([Istanbul 2003], published as Zeyniyye: A Sufi Order Admired by Scholars, Istanbul 2012). He also contributed entries to the 44+2 volume Islamic Encyclopedia (DİA) published by İSAM, and to the Arabic encyclopedia Mevsûatu a‘lâmi’l-ulemâi ve’l-udebâi’l-Arabi ve’l-müslimîn published in Tunisia. He is currently serving as a faculty member at Üsküdar University Institute for Sufi Studies, where he was appointed on June 17, 2019.
