Scope

Over eight weeks, Prof. Dr. Reşat Öngören will focus on the relationship between God, the Universe and the Human Being, and within this framework will address and evaluate, from a Sufi perspective, the topics "Categories of Being and Becoming," "Tawhid and Pantheism," "Prophethood and Deism," "Knowledge of Truth: Revelation and Inspiration," "The Perfect Human Being: The Vicegerent (Khalifa)," "Necessity and Destiny" and "Human Beings and Nature."

Who Is Prof. Dr. Reşat Öngören?

Prof. Dr. Reşat Öngören was born in Ünye in 1963. He graduated from the Marmara University Faculty of Theology in 1988. He completed his master's degree in 1990 and his doctorate in 1996 in the Division of History of Sufism at the Institute of Social Sciences of the same university. Between 1996 and 2000, he worked as a researcher in Sufism at the Turkish Religious Foundation Center for Islamic Studies (İSAM). In January 2001, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Istanbul University Faculty of Theology. He became an Associate Professor in November 2001 and a Professor in November 2007. During the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years, he served as a visiting faculty member at the Higher Islamic Institute in Sofia. Reşat Öngören, who has published many articles, conference papers, encyclopedia entries and book chapters in his field, is the author of the books Osmanlılar’da Tasavvuf: Anadolu’da Sûfîler Devlet ve Ulemâ (Istanbul 2000, 2003, 2012, 2016) and Tarihte Bir Aydın Tarîkatı Zeynîler ([İstanbul 2003], Âlimlerin Gözdesi Bir Tarikat: Zeyniyye, Istanbul 2012). He has also written entries for the 44+2-volume İslam Ansiklopedisi (DİA), published by İSAM, and for the Arabic encyclopedia published in Tunisia, Mevsûatu a‘lâmi’l-ulemâi ve’l-udebâi’l-Arabi ve’l-müslimîn. He currently continues to serve as a faculty member at the Uskudar University Institute For Sufi Studies, to which he was appointed on June 17, 2019.
