About Institute For Sufi Studies

Uskudar University Institute For Sufi Studies

Uskudar University Institute For Sufi Studies was established in July 2014. The aim of the Institute is to create an environment of science and art, based on interdisciplinary studies that draw on the holistic and profound perspective of Sufism, that will serve humanity in attaining peace and happiness. As a specialized institution, through the programs it offers, the Institute aims to educate individuals who have devoted themselves to better understanding science, themselves and the world; who have internalized human and moral values; who are sensitive to art; and who are thoughtful, inquisitive, creative, hardworking, broadly tolerant and aware of the value of time. According to Sufism, the purpose of science goes beyond knowing these values as knowledge; it is to put them into practice in one's life and to use them for the happiness and progress of humanity.

Graduate Programs of the Department of Sufi Culture and Literature

The content of the Sufi Culture and Literature Graduate Programs is structured by relating the subjects of Sufi thought in particular, as well as Sufi history and Sufi literature, holistically to one another and to the fundamental Islamic sciences, and by connecting them with various disciplines of the social sciences, above all the history of Islamic thought and civilization. The program also aims to contribute to the production of interdisciplinary cultural studies based on the perspective of "Islamic civilization, Sufi thought and culture," which focuses on our own cultural geography. On closer inspection, it becomes clear that almost every study related to civilization and culture in this geography must draw on the field of Sufism. It can offer new opportunities for our country in the fields of Area Studies and Religious Studies. Research on Sufism can also bring new perspectives today to those interested in sociology and human psychology.

Sufi Culture and Literature Master's Programs

The Institute For Sufi Studies launched its master's program titled "Sufi Culture and Literature" in February 2016 and admitted its first students in the Spring semester of the 2015-2016 academic year. The program offers those interested from every field the opportunity to pursue graduate education in Sufism and related subjects. The program is organized as master's programs with and without thesis.

Thought, History, and Literature of Islamic Civilization Doctorate Degree

The education provided by the Institute within the scope of the Sufi Culture and Literature Master's Programs has been enriched with the opening of the Thought, History, and Literature of Islamic Civilization Doctorate Degree, which offers deeper and broader scientific opportunities. In our country, there are very few independent interdisciplinary doctoral programs in core fields such as literature, history, religious studies, anthropology and psychology. This program aims to contribute to the development of interdisciplinary studies and the search for new methods in the field of the Humanities. The program admitted its first students in the 2019-2020 Fall Semester.
