What is Forensic Sciences?

Forensic Sciences is the collective term for the technical services carried out to identify and prove crimes and offenders through the examination and evaluation of physical evidence obtained during judicial and administrative investigations. It encompasses all scientific disciplines utilized to ensure the proper administration of justice.

The successful prevention and investigation of crimes—including terrorism, human trafficking, child abuse, cybercrime, illegal drug and arms trafficking, bribery, and forgery—depends directly on the availability of qualified professionals in the field of forensic sciences, crime scene investigations conducted in accordance with international standards, and the analysis of evidence collected from crime scenes, victims, suspects, and witnesses using modern scientific knowledge and advanced technologies.

Evidence collection and examination activities carried out to improve the quality of judicial services are not merely technical processes; they also require the accurate evaluation and interpretation of the findings. Furthermore, indicating error rates in expert witness reports is of great importance in preventing innocent individuals from being wrongfully convicted. The evidence examined is not limited to biological materials such as blood, urine, semen, and bone. It also includes written and printed documents, seals and signatures, narcotic substances and their precursors, explosives and explosive residues, fingerprints, palm prints, footprints and shoeprints, firearms and gunshot residues, fire and explosion debris, marks left by sharp and piercing instruments, glass and paint fragments, plants, soil, fibers, hair, animal remains, as well as audio, speech, and video recordings.

 

Forensic Sciences Program Curriculum

In line with practices in developed countries around the world, our goal is to provide an undergraduate education specifically designed for the field of Forensic Sciences to prepare young professionals who will work in public and private forensic laboratories, conduct scientific research, develop innovative methods and technologies, and apply them in practice. Achieving this objective will enable our public and private forensic institutions and crime laboratories to become internationally recognized and trusted organizations that lead the field and export forensic technologies worldwide.

It is a well-known fact that crime scene investigations are not conducted with the same level of quality throughout every region of Türkiye. Moreover, due to the absence of forensic laboratories in many locations, evidence often has to be transported by mail or courier for examination.

The transfer of evidence from one location to another is one of the primary reasons for inconsistencies in laboratory analyses and unreliable results. All evidence—particularly biological evidence—should ideally be analyzed at or very close to the location where it is collected. In fact, developed countries are increasingly adopting portable forensic technologies and equipment that allow evidence to be examined directly at the crime scene without transporting it to a laboratory.

The undergraduate program in Forensic Sciences aims to educate professionals who possess interdisciplinary thinking skills, a strong and reliable scientific foundation, and extensive laboratory experience. Graduates will be equipped to advance forensic expertise, develop innovative products and technologies, and contribute to the future of forensic science.

By educating graduates with strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills, a curriculum primarily based on the natural sciences, proficiency in developing and applying computer software, and training in scientific writing, public speaking, laboratory ethics, and quality assurance, the program contributes to improving quality standards across a broad spectrum of forensic disciplines. These include drug analysis, hair, fiber, paint, glass, explosive and fire debris analysis, DNA analysis, firearms examination, fingerprint identification, footwear and tire track analysis, questioned document examination, and crime scene investigation. As a result, quality assurance in these essential areas of justice will be strengthened, further increasing public confidence in the judicial system.

Our objectives are to become an international leader in Forensic Sciences education, educate the future leaders of the profession, enhance academic excellence through a balanced commitment to teaching, research, and service, and increase public awareness of science through forensic science education. In line with these goals, the program offers students a rich educational experience that combines practical training with a hands-on approach, enabling them to achieve high levels of intellectual achievement and personal development.

The Forensic Sciences Program provides an open, welcoming, creative, and adaptable teaching and research environment for students, faculty members, and staff. The outcomes of the program are designed to have a positive impact on the forensic science community, law enforcement agencies, and society as a whole.
