What is the Elderly Care Program?
With the Geriatric (Aged) Care Technician Program, advances in medicine and technology globally and in our country have enabled individuals to become more conscious about health, thereby extending life expectancy. As in many countries, there is an increase in the elderly population in our country alongside the young population. This growing elderly population brings about many challenges that need to be addressed.
Gradually, the erosion of the traditional structure and the shift toward the nuclear family lead to the problem of isolation among the elderly. Physiological and psychological changes brought by aging, combined with the increasing difficulty for the elderly to remain with their families, escalate their care needs. The prolonged lifespan and the heightened care requirements of older adults create a demand for professional intermediate staff to directly carry out care services in practice.
Training Competent Experts with Applied Courses
The Üsküdar University Elderly Care Program aims to train expert health technicians capable of implementing and developing elderly care services in public, private, and non-governmental organizations by integrating and internalizing the necessary knowledge, skills, and values regarding elderly care services.
The educational foundation of the Elderly Care Services Program consists of knowing the fundamental characteristics and needs of the elderly, acquiring the skills to meet these needs accordingly, and developing the ability to approach the elderly holistically. Within the scope of the program, in addition to theoretical knowledge, practical applications are conducted in hospitals, nursing homes, elderly care rehabilitation centers, elderly daycare centers, and home care service providers.
Meeting the Needs of Elderly Individuals
The Üsküdar University Elderly Care Services Program trains professionals who can deliver the care required by elderly individuals, prepare and provide the necessary environments, contribute to the development of health standards and the improvement of the quality of life of older adults, possess the qualifications to implement and develop elderly care services, produce solutions, and have analytical thinking skills, teamwork spirit, and a sense of responsibility.
What are the Courses Taken in the Elderly Care Program?
In the first year of our education, courses include: Basic Anatomy and Physiology, Basic Gerontology, Principles and Practices of Elderly Care I, Positive Psychology and Communication Sciences, University Culture I, Principles of Atatürk and History of the Revolution I, Turkish Language I, English I, Principles of Nutrition, Basic Pharmacology, Chronic Diseases in the Elderly I, Principles and Practices of Elderly Care II, University Culture II, Principles of Atatürk and History of the Revolution II, Turkish Language II, and English II.
In the second year of our education, courses include: First Aid, Principles and Practices of Elderly Care III, Chronic Diseases in the Elderly II, Professional Ethics, Home Elderly Care Services, Principles and Practices of Elderly Care IV, Rehabilitation in the Elderly, Social Responsibility, and Summer Internship.
What are the Employment Fields for Elderly Care Program Graduates?
Graduates can work under expert supervision in hospices and elderly care services operated by social services and child protection agencies, municipalities, hospitals, non-governmental organizations, and relevant units of private institutions.
Those wishing to pursue an undergraduate education can continue their studies in bachelor's degree programs through the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS), provided that quotas are available in their fields, in accordance with regulatory provisions.
