According to the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) preference calendar shared by the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), the additional preference period, which started on September 6, will end on September 11, 2024, at 23.59.
Stating that, unlike the initial placement, additional placement considers scores, Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş said, “All candidates who have an placement score can choose undergraduate and associate degree programs whose quotas were not filled and minimum scores were not formed with central placement.” Tözeniş added that scholarship opportunities during this period should also be evaluated.

Üsküdar University Preference and Career Counselor, Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş, shared important information regarding the additional placement process and listed the points that need attention.
Candidate must not have been placed in any program!
Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş emphasized that in order to make a preference for additional placement, the candidate must not have been placed in any program in the 2024 central placement, stating, “Candidates who have been placed in a program cannot apply for additional placement. Unlike the initial placement, a fee has been determined by ÖSYM for additional placement, and this fee must be deposited through the specified banks until the last day of application. Otherwise, the application will not be considered. Candidates can make as many preferences as they wish, not exceeding 24, from the tables for which they have the right to choose.”
Placement will be made based on base scores, not success rank!
“Additional placement will be made based on base scores, unlike central placement, which is based on success ranks,” said Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş, continuing as follows:
“Candidates whose scores are equal to or above the base score in the relevant program type will be able to choose associate and undergraduate programs whose quotas were filled and base scores were determined through central placement, but where vacancies arose after registration. As in central placement, candidates will not be able to choose programs with scores above their own in additional placement. All candidates who have an placement score will be able to choose undergraduate and associate degree programs whose quotas were not filled and minimum scores were not formed with central placement.”
School valedictorian quota cannot be utilized!
Ece Tözeniş stated that candidates with school valedictorian status will not be able to benefit from the school valedictorian quota in additional placement, adding, “In additional placement, school valedictorians will create their preferences according to the general quota. For martyr-veteran relatives, earthquake victims, and women over 34 quotas, candidates will create their preferences in accordance with the determined rules.”
Threshold success rank continues…
The threshold ranking rule, valid for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Architecture, and Teaching programs, also continues in additional placement. Candidates who fall below the determined threshold success ranks will not be able to choose these departments in additional placement,” she stated.
Those placed through special talent exams can apply
Tözeniş also noted that candidates who have been placed in a higher education program through a special talent exam in 2024-YKS can apply for additional placement, listing other points candidates should pay attention to:
“Since the quotas for the programs you will choose according to central placement have decreased, be sure to create your preference list by considering the quotas of the departments/programs. Making your preference list from departments with only 1-2 quotas remaining will reduce your chances of placement. Making more choices, including the departments you want and would attend if placed, will increase your chances of placement. After the additional placement guide is published, when creating your preference lists, be sure to read the special conditions and explanations section in the guide. As in central placement, if you are placed in additional placement, whether you register or not, your OBP will be halved next year. You can create your preferences by considering this.”
The decision to take a gap year is as important as making a preference…
“Making the decision to take a gap year is as important as making a preference,” said Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş, adding, “During the additional placement period, candidates should ask themselves once again, instead of thinking ‘whatever department it is, this is my last chance, I must be placed,’ if the department I am considering truly suits me and what it will contribute to achieving my future goals. A department they will not be happy with if placed will cause them to lose time in achieving their life goals, and on the other hand, if they do not register after being placed, their OBP will be halved in the following year.”
What should those considering a gap year do?
Ece Tözeniş stated that students who decide to take a gap year should start their exam preparations without delay, saying, “They can learn from the mistakes they made and what they couldn't achieve last year and draw a roadmap for themselves. Working in a planned, scheduled manner and regularly reviewing topics will be the biggest factor in their success in this process.”
Special opportunity scholarship options for this period should be evaluated!
Pointing out that, as in initial placements, it is essential to get support from expert preference counselors to correctly prepare preference lists during the additional placement period, Ece Tözeniş concluded her words by saying, “Research the universities you will choose very well, and if you have the opportunity, definitely visit the university. During this period, also research the different scholarship opportunities of foundation universities. Be sure to evaluate the special opportunity scholarship privileges.”
