In today's globalized world, interactions among societies speaking different languages are becoming increasingly intensive. International cooperation across a wide range of fields, including economics, culture, trade, technology, politics, and space exploration, has created a complex, multilayered network of communication. The strength and effectiveness of this network depend on high-quality translation and effective communication. In particular, the rapid advancements in language technologies, large language models, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have increased the demand not only for individuals with strong language proficiency but also for translators who are technologically literate and possess advanced intercultural communication skills.
As one of the primary languages of global communication, English provides a common platform that brings together people from different cultures and societies. Consequently, the need for professionals specializing in translation and interpreting continues to grow.
The primary objective of the Bachelor's Program in English Translation and Interpreting is to educate our students as professional translators and interpreters who are capable of translating and interpreting written and spoken texts between English and Turkish accurately and effectively across all levels and fields, while adhering to high ethical and professional standards. In addition, conducting academic research at both national and international levels and contributing to the field of Translation Studies through collaboration between academia and industry are among the program's key priorities.
A Comprehensive Education
Our program offers a well-rounded educational approach that enables students to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Through a curriculum that covers translation theories, applied translation practices, language technologies, and intercultural communication, we prepare our students for successful professional careers.
Our students have the opportunity to:
- Specialize in translation and interpreting;
- Work in specialized fields such as medical, legal, commercial, media, literary, theatre, film, game, disaster, and sports translation;
- Use translation technologies and current industry-standard software;
- Develop expertise in terminology management and subject-matter knowledge;
- Acquire intercultural communication and research skills.
The program also offers elective courses from various academic departments across the university, enabling students to gain subject-specific expertise in the fields in which they intend to work as translators. As a result, our graduates develop not only linguistic competence but also strong disciplinary knowledge.
International Opportunities
Our department offers students the opportunity to study German, Spanish, or Russian as a second foreign language. In addition, Double Major, Minor, and Erasmus+ opportunities support our students' academic and professional development.
The department maintains Erasmus exchange partnerships with universities in Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Romania, Morocco, and the United States, among many other countries. Furthermore, it collaborates with leading professional organizations and institutions in the field, including the Çeviri Derneği (Translation Association), Çevirmenler Meslek Birliği (Professional Association of Translators), and Rus Evi (Russian House).
Career Opportunities
Our graduates are qualified to pursue careers in public institutions, government ministries, embassies, consulates, educational institutions, and banks, as well as in the private sector, including healthcare organizations, translation agencies, international trade companies, tourism enterprises, sports clubs, publishing houses, copyright agencies, and media organizations.
In addition, our graduates may choose career paths such as freelance translation, localization, editing, publishing, project management, and academia, all of which offer diverse and rewarding professional opportunities.
Our department provides students with free access to the Phrase Academic Edition platform for use in translation courses.
Matecat is also used in our translation courses. As an open-source Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tool, Matecat enables our students to continue using the same platform after graduation, thereby supporting the continuity of their professional development.
