The duration of study in the Department of Midwifery is four years, and the language of instruction is Turkish. In our department, which offers formal education, a curriculum prepared in line with the National Core Curriculum for Midwifery (EUÇEP) is implemented. The education program is structured with a holistic approach that progresses from basic sciences to professional knowledge and skills, from theoretical education to practice, and from healthy processes to the management of risky situations. Starting from the preconception period, the program covers pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and the newborn period, as well as women’s health, child health, reproductive health, community health, and midwifery care for different stages of life. Accordingly, the aim is to educate students as competent midwives who can holistically assess the needs of women, newborns, families, and society, support normal processes, recognize risky situations at an early stage, and collaborate with appropriate health professionals when necessary.
The curriculum of the Department of Midwifery includes basic science and profession-specific courses, together with laboratory and field practice aimed at developing midwifery skills. In addition to courses that provide students with a scientific foundation, such as Applied Basic Anatomy, Human Physiology, Histology and Embryology, General Nutrition and Biochemistry, Microbiology, Psychology, Biostatistics, and Pharmacology, there are profession-oriented courses, in particular Introduction to Midwifery and Basic Concepts, Basic Principles and Practices in Midwifery I-II, Health Assessment, Healthy Pregnancy and Midwifery Care, High-Risk Pregnancies and Midwifery Care, Care in Medical and Surgical Diseases in Midwifery, Labor and Postpartum Care, High-Risk Labor and Postpartum Care, Newborn Care, Gynecological Diseases and Care, Child Health and Diseases, Care in Women’s Mental Health and Illnesses, Sexuality, Reproductive Health and Family Planning, First Aid and Emergency Care, Teaching in Midwifery, Management in Midwifery, Community Health Services, History of Midwifery and Ethics, Research Methods in Health Sciences, and Graduation Project I-II. The curriculum also includes elective courses that enable students to develop their knowledge and skills in different areas in line with their professional interests and needs, such as Healthy and High-Risk Pregnancies and Midwifery Care, Normal and High-Risk Labor and Postpartum Midwifery Care, Sexual Health Education, Transcultural Midwifery, Prenatal Education, Care in Adolescence, Forensic Midwifery, and Natural and Alternative Birth Methods. Students reinforce the knowledge they gain in theoretical courses through skills practice and simulation exercises carried out in the laboratory, and develop their professional knowledge and skills in real care settings through clinical field practice. In the final semester, there is an internship/workplace vocational training practice that enables students to use the knowledge, skills, and competencies they have acquired throughout their education in a holistic manner.
Students receive instruction in theoretical and practical courses from expert and competent faculty members. In line with the practice-oriented nature of midwifery education, various teaching and learning methods are used to ensure students’ active participation in courses and the learning process, such as group work, case studies, demonstrations, laboratory practice, simulation, role-playing, creative drama, concept maps, and article reviews . Through these methods, students are supported not only in acquiring theoretical knowledge but also in developing their clinical decision-making, problem-solving, communication, professional skills, and professional responsibilities.
By integrating theoretical education, laboratory practice, and clinical field practice, the education program aims to enable students to develop the midwifery knowledge, skills, and competencies defined in line with EUÇEP. Accordingly, the program aims for students to acquire the competencies to protect and promote the health of women and newborns; to safely manage pregnancy, labor, and postpartum processes; to provide newborn care; to recognize risky situations at an early stage and refer them appropriately; to provide midwifery services addressing the health needs of individuals, families, and society; and to carry out evidence-based, ethical, and professional midwifery practice.
