Üsküdar University Translation Technologies Laboratory is a pioneering center that aims to train experts with the competence to keep up with the rapidly changing dynamics of the industry. By combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, our laboratory offers a comprehensive training environment that enables students and professionals to gain high-level skills in the field of translation technologies. By combining traditional translation methods with the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative technologies, we aim to make our students competent in specialized translation and technological tools.
The Translation Technologies Lab aims to develop expertise in modern translation practices and provide in-depth training in the latest translation technologies. By utilizing advanced technologies such as Machine Translation (MT) and Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, we enable our students to successfully manage the complexities of specialized translations. By bridging the gap between traditional translation methods and AI-based innovations, we train professionals who will shape the industry.
Our lab offers a robust curriculum covering the full spectrum of translation technologies. Designed to ensure that our students acquire both basic and advanced skills, our programs include the following core areas:
1. Machine Translation (MT) Basics
Machine Translation has revolutionized the translation industry, enabling faster and more efficient workflows. The following trainings are provided in our laboratory:
- Basic Training: Introduction to the principles of machine translation, how neural machine translation (NMT) systems work and their applications in real-world scenarios.
- Adapting to Current Technologies: Training on how to integrate MT systems with current technological developments and ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Final Editing Skills: It teaches how to edit machine-generated translations to achieve high-quality, human-like results, with a focus on accuracy and cultural nuances.
2. Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) Tools
CAT tools are an essential element for professional translators to increase productivity and consistency. Our trainings include
- Basic Tool Usage: Hands-on training on the use of leading CAT tools such as SDL Trados Studio, MemoQ and Wordfast.
- Translation Memory Management: Techniques for creating, managing and optimizing translation memory (TM).
- Terminology Management: How to create and use terminology databases to ensure consistency in specialized areas.
3. Special Area Translations
Translation in specialized fields such as law, medicine, technical and finance requires a high level of expertise. Our laboratory offers specialized training to improve translation skills in these areas:
- Legal Translation: Terminology, structure and translation techniques of legal documents.
- Medical Translation: Expertise required to translate medical reports, articles and patient documents.
- Technical Translation: Accurate and effective translation methods in engineering, IT and other technical fields.
4. Large Language Models (LLM) and Artificial Intelligence Translation Tools
Artificial intelligence is shaping the future of translation technologies. Our lab provides comprehensive training on how to use Large Language Models (LLM) in translation processes:
- LLM Basics: The role and applications of Large Language Models in translation processes.
- Artificial Intelligence Based Translation Tools: Specialized training for seniors on the use of current AI translation tools and their contribution to translation quality.
- Ethics and Quality Control: Ethical issues and quality control processes in AI-based translations.
5. Hands-on Workshops and Real World Projects
Real world projects and workshops are organized in our laboratory for our students to apply theoretical knowledge in practice:
- Simulations: Use of CAT and MT tools with scenarios that mimic real translation projects.
- Group Projects: Ability to manage complex translation projects through teamwork.
- Industry Collaborations: Gain experience in real projects by collaborating with professionals from the translation industry.
