2 New Books by Dr. Ömer Osmanoğlu

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Philosophy Department Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ömer Osmanoğlu’s two new books have met with readers. Published by Ark Kitapları, the books “Justice in Political Philosophy: Theories of Justice in Antiquity and the Middle Ages” and “The Ideal State and Virtuous Society: The Political Philosophy of Plato and Farabi” will contribute to philosophical literature.

“The Concept of Justice from Past to Present”

Theories of justice, which have been on the agenda throughout world history and put forward by philosophers, are discussed by Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Osmanoğlu in his work titled “Justice in Political Philosophy: Theories of Justice in Antiquity and the Middle Ages,” comprehensively encompassing all their meanings in a multidimensional way. In the work published by Ark Kitapları, Osmanoğlu states that the main goal of philosophers is to seek justice and to demonstrate how it can be achieved, emphasizing that justice is the dominant power in an ideal world order.

In his work, Osmanoğlu reveals that the concept of justice is a subject of many scientific disciplines, explaining that it is a subject of psychology because it relates to the inner order of the human soul, and a subject of sociology because it is a criterion that maintains the balance of social structure. The work thoroughly explains the view that the concept of justice stands at the center of law in terms of rights, equality, and laws, and at the center of economics in terms of the distribution of property, interests, or positions. When you start reading the work, you will see the views on justice of Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, medieval philosophers, and Muslim thinkers comprehensively and multidimensionally discussed.

“Is an ideal state and virtuous society possible in the Modern Age?”

In his work titled ‘The Ideal State and Virtuous Society: The Political Philosophy of Plato and Farabi,’ Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Osmanoğlu seeks the answer to the question 'Can an ideal state and virtuous society be possible?' In this work, he explains the psychology of being a society to his readers and addresses the challenges of forming a society and building a state in the contemporary era. The book, which will make a significant contribution to philosophical literature, compares the philosophies of Plato, the great genius of Greek philosophy, and Farabi, the founder of Islamic political philosophy. In the work published by Ark Kitapları, it is explained that the concept of the state, as the political representative of societies, represents the unity of society, and society is defined as the desire and determination to live together. The author explains that contemporary societies and states operate with an existential anxiety driven by material needs and ambitions, emphasizing that societies and states are dragged into endless struggles and destructive wars. Stating that we have lost the true meaning of being a society and building a state in the contemporary era, Osmanoğlu discusses whether it is possible to build an ideal state and a virtuous society again by comparing the philosophies of Plato and Farabi.
