Today, Music Psychology provides a basis for studying and researching music in general with individual and social variables such as perceiving, remembering, creating, interpreting, expressing, age, gender and social conditions. Because music is an art that best expresses the various reactions of the soul. Because of this feature, people are more influenced by music compared to other art branches; is a natural link between Psychology and Music that studies mental behavior.
Our University’s Music Therapy Practice and Research Center (Mute) in the main objective, in Turkey, is providing an efficient method of Music Therapy learning as to be the "inter-disciplinary learning and research and development center". Individuals in need of special education; Developing the basic self-care skills, independent living skills of patients with mental, physical, speech and language development difficulties, sensory, visual, social, emotional or behavioral problems and ensuring their adaptation to society. MÜTEM, which is an institution that continuously develops itself in this field, provides a contemporary multi-disciplinary learning environment to students and researchers in the field of Psychology and Psychiatry, and also provides an effective ground for practice and publication activities.
The World Music Therapy Federation describes the treatment with music as "designed by a trained music therapist for music and/or musical elements (voice, rhythm, melody, and harmony) to develop and increase communication, relationship, learning, expression, mobilization, organization and other related therapeutic elements that a person or group needs to meet their physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs.
The research methods applied at the center include classical observations, surveys and experiments, as well as analysis of various brain imaging techniques such as tomography, magnetic resonance, doppler sonography. The data obtained help us understand what processes music goes through when processing in the brain.
In order to stay away from the negative emotions people are in, our center aims to apply the occupational therapy method by offering the opportunity to participate in activities such as art, (marbling, painting, group music, choir, making music with instruments) especially music. How music is processed in the brain, what psychological, physiological and neurological changes occur while playing or listening, make important references to both the music therapy session and those who receive music education. Because about knowing how music is perceived and how to apply it in the best way; It is one of the most important goals of MÜTEM.
