Instructor Dr. Elif Zapsu from Üsküdar University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Psychology (English), participated as a speaker in a special lecture held at Kyoto University, one of Japan's established higher education institutions. In the lecture titled “Love and Death in Sufi Psychotherapy: A New Therapeutic Approach”, a new Sufism-based psychotherapy approach was shared with academics and students.

The event, held at the invitation of Dr. Yasushi Tonaga, Director of Kyoto University's Center for Islamic Area Studies and Professor at Kyoto University's Institute for Asian and African Area Studies, took place at the Kyoto University Research Building.

A New Psychotherapeutic Approach Centered on Sufism Was Discussed
Instructor Dr. Elif Zapsu shared insights regarding the “Psychology of Religion and Belief” course she has been conducting for the past two years at Üsküdar University. In her presentation, she explained the theoretical foundations and development process of a new psychotherapeutic approach centered on Sufism. It was stated that this approach was developed at the University of Edinburgh, where Zapsu completed her master's and doctoral studies.
Extensive Exchange of Ideas Took Place Among Academics
In the meeting held after the presentation, extensive evaluations were made on the integration of Sufism into the field of psychology and the possibilities for interdisciplinary work.
During the exchange of views among academics, the intersection points of psychology and Sufism studies were discussed.
Evidence-Based Research Continues
It was stated that Dr. Elif Zapsu is conducting evidence-based research projects on this approach in collaboration with the Young Lives Foundation. It was noted that the studies aim to strengthen the scientific foundations of the Sufism-based psychotherapy approach.
