Following the YKS general placement results, the additional placement process offers a significant opportunity for candidates who could not be placed in any program or did not make their choices in the initial phase. Expert Psychological Counselor Özgür Akoğlan reminds that the rules of this process, which he defines as a valuable second chance, should be carefully examined.

Akoğlan pointed out that one of the most critical points in additional placement is the base score requirement, emphasizing that the preference list should be prepared not only by looking at the score but also according to the departments the candidate truly wishes to study. Akoğlan stated, “No program that will not be attended if won should be included in the list. Because being placed in a department through additional placement and not registering leads to a significant loss of rights by halving the Secondary Education Achievement Score in the following year.”

Expert Psychological Counselor Özgür Akoğlan, Manager of Üsküdar University Educational Institutions and Guidance Services, evaluated the points candidates should pay attention to during the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) additional placement process.

“Additional placement is an extremely valuable second chance”

Özgür Akoğlan stated that candidates who could not be placed in any higher education program after the YKS general placement results or did not submit their preferences in the initial phase should carefully evaluate the additional placement process, saying, “The additional placement process offers an extremely valuable second chance on the path to achieving university dreams.”

Özgür Akoğlan also provided information on who can benefit from additional placement, stating, “Only those who remained unplaced in the central placement, those who did not make any preferences in the first period, and candidates who gained the right to enroll in a program through a special talent exam can benefit from this process.”

Candidates placed in a program during general placement cannot apply for additional placement

Özgür Akoğlan stated that one of the most frequently overlooked issues by candidates during the additional placement process is the right to apply, explaining, “Candidates placed in any higher education program, regardless of whether it is formal or open education, in the general placement, lose their right to apply for additional placement, whether they have registered or not.”

The most critical rule is the base score requirement

Özgür Akoğlan said that candidates should approach the evaluation of their scores in additional placement with a different logic than in general placement, stating, “The most critical and determining rule of additional placement is the base score requirement. To be able to choose programs whose quotas were completely filled in the first placement and remained vacant due to non-registration or relinquishment, the candidate's YKS placement score must be equal to or higher than the general placement base score formed for that department. While the system does not allow candidates whose scores are below the base score to be placed in these programs; all candidates whose scores are calculated in the relevant score type can prefer these programs, as no base score is formed in departments whose quotas were not filled in the first placement or in newly opened departments.”

Success rank conditions also continue in additional placement

Akoğlan stated that the success rank conditions applied in departments such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law, architecture, engineering, and teaching are also valid in additional placement, adding, “The success rank threshold rule fully maintains its validity in additional placement as well.”

“Sort Your Preference List According to Your Desire, Not Your Score”

Özgür Akoğlan emphasized that candidates should base their 24 preference rights on their true order of desire, stating, “The logic of success rank in general placement must be replaced by current base score analysis. The preference list should be created according to the candidate's true order of desire, not by score; no program that will not be attended if won should be included in the list. Because being placed in a department through additional placement and not registering leads to a significant loss of rights by halving the Secondary Education Achievement Score (OBP) in the following year. Therefore, candidates should add both their target departments and strong guarantor options with a balanced distribution to their lists.”

Not just scores, but also university facilities should be considered

Özgür Akoğlan stated that considering only score compatibility in university and department selection is not sufficient, adding, “In department and university selection, not only score compatibility but also the academic staff, accreditations, double major and Erasmus+ exchange opportunities of institutions, scholarship cut-off conditions of foundation universities, and campus transportation and accommodation facilities should be meticulously researched. In today's dynamics, information and artificial intelligence-focused engineering, health and life sciences, new generation management fields, and two-year vocational school programs with high sectoral employment offer strong alternatives.”

Making the choice is not Enough, the payment process must also be completed

Akoğlan pointed out that the technical stages of the additional placement process should also be carefully followed. Özgür Akoğlan concluded his words by saying, “After the preferences are approved via the ÖSYM Candidate Transactions System, it is mandatory to deposit the determined additional placement fee within the official period through the ÖSYM Card Payment System or contracted banks; as applications for which the fee is not paid are directly deemed invalid by the system. Managing the additional placement process with professional guidance support, without losing motivation and with conscious steps, will open the door to placement in the targeted university.”
