Prof. Dr. Sırrı Akbaba, Vice Rector of Üsküdar University and faculty member of the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, has released his book 'Knowing Yourself - To Become Proficient and Happy with the Guidance of Sages', published by Pozitif Yayınları, which has taken its place on the shelves. Prof. Dr. Akbaba's new book contains deep insights into psychology, human beings, and the sense of self. The book is also significant for its potential to make a great contribution to the field of education sciences.
Prof. Dr. Sırrı Akbaba, who has previously published two other books titled 'Bullying in School and Virtual Environment' and 'Learning Psychology with Empathy', continues his work by contributing to the field of education sciences.
The new book, which will fill a significant gap in its field, has garnered interest from the very first days.
The book draws attention to the fact that humans generally have two characteristics that need to be recognized: material (concrete) and spiritual (abstract).
“The human body and its associated brain are material and concrete, while the 'self' and its distinguishing feature, reason, are spiritual and abstract. The material characteristics of humans are mostly the subject of biology, while the spiritual aspect is the subject of psychology. Since the book addresses self-knowledge, this book attempts to introduce the 'reasoning self' rather than the body.
Topics attempted to be explained out of their context have been introduced either incorrectly or incompletely, rather than accurately. The view that understanding humans correctly is possible by explaining their relationships with all beings in the universe has gained validity today. However, due to the influence of some approaches (objectivist, mechanistic, molecular, pragmatist, etc.), contemporary psychology has examined humans detached from their context, thereby hindering their accurate understanding. Farabi and Ibn Sina, who emphasized the singularity of the universe, related all subjects they examined to other beings in the universe. The main purpose of this study is to examine humans within the context of all beings in a single universe.
It is hoped that upon reading this book, one will come to know the essence of what humans call the 'self'. Despite the intersection of the sciences of biology and psychology, the distinct aspects of the 'self' (nefs), which we assume will be the main subject of psychology in the future, and the body, the primary subject of biology, will become clear. By integrating the subjective and objective aspects of humans, a more accurate understanding will be achieved. Correctly recognizing humans as humans, not as machines or animals, will instill self-confidence, and this self-confidence will lead people to utilize knowledge and skills towards good. Once the 'self' is recognized, the path to the superconscious will open, and at least by accepting the existence of the superconscious, higher-level experiences will be activated. People with superconsciousness will produce good instead of the evils produced by the subconscious.”
