Psychiatrist, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that bayrams experienced after difficult times strengthen relationships with greater empathy and reveal the power of spiritual values like the visible tip of an iceberg, said, "There are different periods in a person's life. We, as a country, are experiencing our first bayram after a difficult period. Therefore, while celebrating bayram, let's not forget that we are also in a post-traumatic period. During bayram, let's definitely think about what more we can do for people affected by the earthquake and how we can help them. One part of the community cannot be happy while the other part is unhappy."
Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, evaluated the importance of bayrams and their place in society. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the value of bayrams on social life is very universal, stating that bayrams teach relationship management and spoke about the importance of relationships established through bayram.
One part of the community cannot be happy while the other part is unhappy
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, noting that the post-earthquake period is one of the most difficult periods of our lives, said, "There are different periods in a person's life. We, as a country, are experiencing our first bayram after a difficult period. Due to the earthquake, our Eid al-Fitr (Ramazan Bayramı) is passing with a heavy heart. Therefore, while celebrating bayram, let's not forget that we are also in a post-traumatic period. During bayram, let's definitely think about what more we can do for people affected by the earthquake and how we can help them. One part of the community cannot be happy while the other part is unhappy. The fewer disadvantaged people there are, the happier society is. Bayrams are days to increase happiness."
Living without thinking of others is the greatest enemy of global peace
Tarhan underlined that bayrams are times when the beauty of being a family is felt most strongly, saying, "This bayram, while experiencing our own family, we also experience a feeling of thinking about other families. By experiencing the concept of empathy at the highest level, we feel that aid and good deeds are intertwining, revitalizing, and being put into action. Just like the visible tip of an iceberg, we feel that the spiritual value of bayram is revealed. Living without thinking of others is the greatest enemy of global peace. Selfish living is the greatest enemy of global peace. We will overcome this difficult period with empathy. It is very necessary for us to consider this and to have made bayrams a culture, and it has social benefits. The most important benefit is to the family structure. We should see bayrams as increasing the social capital within the family."
Bayrams are the cure for empathy poverty
Emphasizing that there is empathy poverty today, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, "Bayrams are the cure for empathy poverty. They are the cure for learning. Going to bayram prayer with our child, giving something to the child's hand while helping others and saying 'you help', teaches not only taking but also giving. Because life is not about exchange, but about giving. The giver wins. During bayram, one must live by sharing. A society where people always say 'me, me, me' will not find peace. In societies and individuals' inner worlds where people always live saying 'me, me, me', there is no peace, and there is no peace in the family either. There will be competition between the person who says 'I'll eat the best part of the food' and other siblings. Fights will break out, there will be no peace at home. It is the same in society."
Bayrams are the most enjoyable life lesson where elders will lead children
Tarhan, stating that bayrams are the most enjoyable life lesson where elders will lead children,
"Especially, we should not take away the feeling of hope when children meet their elders. If we take this away from children, if we speak hopelessly and pessimistically, this will cause the greatest harm to children, wounding their developing spirits. Bayrams provide moments when children meet their elders, share their troubles if they have any, and make their elders happy with their joys. After the disaster period, we once again realized the importance of solidarity. This process allowed us to once again understand, first, the ability to breathe, the importance and value of our family, our loved ones, friends, and companions. More importantly, we felt the importance of helping, one of the most crucial elements of high human values, and the power of the emotion it creates, down to our bones. Children learn to develop behavior from the family. Information given in the form of conferences, advice, and sermons does not become permanent in the developing spirits of children. For this reason, bayrams are the most enjoyable life lesson where high human values are passed down from generation to generation, where ancient wisdom that will serve as a constant reminder is transmitted, and where elders will lead children." şeklinde örnekledi.
Bayrams teach relationship management
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, noting that another aspect of bayram is establishing cooperation with other people, said, "It provides an opportunity to converse with our family and loved ones, share, and establish relationships. Bayrams are the area where we learn relationship management, and they contribute to the spiritual and psychological enrichment of a person." Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan added, "This is possible by learning sharing, relationship management, and respecting the rights of others. Empathy is not crying with someone who is crying, but understanding their feelings and building relationships by considering their needs and rights. There are many disadvantaged people in society or people waiting for help. We need to think about them too. Bayrams are an opportunity to provide spiritual help to these people in some way. Let's let our children taste the beauty and joy of doing good. Let's teach our children these meanings of bayrams."
