Op. Dr. Salih Selman: From Medical Remedy to Spiritual Cure…

An event titled “From Medical Remedy to Spiritual Cure” was organized by the Young Medical Professionals Club of Üsküdar Üniversitesi’s Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports. Op. Dr. Salih Selman participated as a guest speaker at the event. Selman emphasized the importance of giving thanks to Allah during happy and prosperous times, instead of turning to Him only when experiencing hardship and difficulty. Stating that Islam is a religion of togetherness, Selman said; “If we live according to the wishes of the Quran and Allah, we will all be happy together.”

The event, held at the Ibn-i Sina Auditorium of Üsküdar Üniversitesi NP Health Campus, attracted significant interest from external participants, as well as faculty academics and students.

Mehmet Hamza Budulgan: “We have established this community with the aim of creating a sincere bond”

Mehmet Hamza Budulgan, President of the Young Medical Professionals Club, delivered the opening speech of the event. Budulgan said; “Our aim was to provide an environment where aspiring physicians could form a sincere brotherhood with each other, beyond just a collegial understanding. Our efforts have always been directed towards this. Our primary goal is to foster a sense of sincerity that goes beyond mere professional colleagueship, also serving as an investment in ourselves for the future. We established this community not for personal gain, but purely to connect with each other and create a sincere bond.”

Op. Dr. Salih Selman: “Those who turn to Allah are certainly provided for…”

Op. Dr. Salih Selman, explaining how a person's relationship with Allah should be, said; “We desire a perfect life; we want everything at our fingertips. When there's a deficiency, we turn to Allah. In sickness, in hardship, we turn to Allah. A prophet is astonished by the abundant provision of Hz. Maryam (Virgin Mary). He is surprised and wonders where it came from. Yet, Hz. Maryam was not seeking provision. She had dedicated her life to worshipping Allah. If you invest in the afterlife, not in this world, you can also have provisions in this world that no one else can attain. The verse says, ‘Those who turn to Allah are certainly provided for.’”

“It is very important to see affliction as a test and show patience”

Op. Dr. Salih Selman, discussing how one should react in the face of an affliction, said; “Professionals devoted to Allah are conversing among themselves. These individuals are Hasan al-Basri, Ibrahim ibn Adham, Sufyan al-Thawri, and Rabia al-Adawiyya. They are discussing, ‘When Allah sends an affliction, how should a person react to Allah so as not to err in servitude?’ While healthy, we are normal, but reactions can change according to the degree of hardship.

Sufyan al-Thawri says, ‘I rejoice in affliction because Allah remembers me and tests me. When affliction comes, I immediately show patience.’

Rabia al-Adawiyya says, ‘I don’t just remain patient; I also give thanks.’

Hasan al-Basri says, ‘I show patience, I give thanks, and I am also pleased with this affliction. Allah is with me.’

Ibrahim Hakki also says, ‘Once one turns to Allah with everything, would a person ever choose between the sour and the sweet, the bad and the good?’

It is very important to see affliction as a test and show patience.” he concluded.

“Islam is a religion to be lived together”

Dr. Selman, drawing attention to Islam being a religion of togetherness, said; “If we appreciate the blessings of today and become good servants to our Lord, we will live in a more beautiful environment. Islam is a religion to be lived together. A football match is played by 11 people; a goalkeeper is essential, defenders are essential – these all happen together. Similarly, if we all live according to the wishes of the Quran and Allah, we will all be happy together. May Allah grant us to be among those who work for those days. If you are a doctor, you will perform your given duty properly; if you are a Muslim, you will command good and forbid evil, and you will be part of such a society.”

“If you look beautifully, you see beautiful things”

Op. Dr. Salih Selman, speaking about the problems people face when they fall into a void and drawing attention to the importance of perseverance when doing a task, said; “If you look beautifully, you see beautiful things. If you look at what Allah will teach me, if you think beautifully, you will learn lessons from events. There is nothing we cannot do, provided we know how to ask from Allah. Its beginning is difficult, but it will surely become easy. If you continue with a task, after a while, you will surely want to do it. When one falls into a void, the brain immediately becomes lazy, the spirit immediately weakens, and the goal immediately disappears.”

At the end of the event, a bouquet of flowers was presented to Op. Dr. Salih Selman by the Young Medical Professionals Club.

Subsequently, Prof. Dr. Mevlüt Sait Keleş, a faculty member of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine, presented a plaque to Op. Dr. Salih Selman.

The event concluded after a group photo session.
