The video of the penguin separating from the colony, featured in Werner Herzog's 2007 documentary 'Encounters at the End of the World', reached millions on social media. Quickly becoming an element of popular culture, the “Nihilist Penguin” transcended being just a documentary segment and began to signify many different meanings. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan touched upon critical details regarding human psychology in his statements to Tgrthaber.com. Here is “Nihilist Penguin” through Tarhan's eyes…

Lately, everywhere we look on social media, we see the Nihilist Penguin. This documentary segment, which initially circulated as an innocent video, quickly evolved into different versions. Millions of people used the video of the penguin separating from the colony to express their inner feelings. Some shared it with emotional music, others with meaningful text. So, why have people embraced this penguin so much? Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated this issue as “the inner voice of the modern individual crushed between the gears of the system.” Here are Tarhan's very special statements to Tgrthaber.com…

“A symbolic rebellion of modern man”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that to understand why the Nihilist Penguin has been embraced so much, it is necessary to analyze this metaphor with historical examples and delve into the depths of human psychology. “When we look at history; before the French Revolution, we see the emergence of 'rebellious' figures like Rousseau, Voltaire, and Robespierre, and before the Bolshevik Revolution, during periods when the monarchy's sense of justice was eroding,” said Tarhan, adding, “The common characteristic of these periods is a serious 'decay of meaning' and 'accumulated anger' in society. Today, a similar situation is being experienced on a global scale. Reflected in United Nations (UN) reports; soaring income inequality, unfair distribution, and global injustice have accumulated a great internal reaction in people. That penguin became a 'symbolic rebellion' of modern man, trapped within this system, subjected to injustice, and having lost his meaning, a reflection of his accumulated anger.”

“Real pains are often very heavy burdens for the human mind to carry”

The expert underscored that real pains can sometimes be very heavy burdens for the human mind to carry, stating, “Instead of directly confronting tragedies, people find it easier to project their feelings through metaphors. The penguin here is a tool; people react by attributing a 'metaphorical meaning' through that penguin to the injustice in the world, their own loneliness, and their desire to break free from the system.”

“Loneliness feels like poison to a person”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that the most fundamental feature distinguishing the human brain from other living creatures is that it is “an organ seeking meaning,” and said, “Neuroscientific studies and chocolate experiments on kindergarten children show that; the sense of justice has a genetic basis (metacognitive genes) rather than being something learned. Yalom speaks of 4 fundamental anxieties awaiting humankind. One of these fears is the search for meaning. When meaning is not found, anxiety arises. Another is the desire for freedom. A person feels anxious when they do not feel free. A general fear is the fear of death. When a definition is not made regarding death, fear increases. Another fear is loneliness. Loneliness feels like poison to a person. These are fundamental existential fears. Behind these fears is a single emotion: uncertainty. When we define uncertainty, these fears immediately resolve. The greatest enemy of freedom is lawlessness. What protects freedom are correct rules. When you bring such definitions, fears disappear,” he assessed.

“It is a social cue”

Tarhan stated that the biggest danger today is “global loneliness” and the existential anxiety it brings, saying, “The modern world, while placing the individual in comfort, distanced them from meaning. That penguin separating from the colony; is actually the inner voice of the modern individual who becomes lonely in crowds, is crushed between the gears of the system, and says, 'I want to leave this flock too.' Humanity, looking at that penguin, is actually weeping for its own loneliness, its own injustices, and its own crisis of meaning. It is also a reflection of accumulated anger… This video is a silent but profound social cue of the deterioration in global system's mental health and the need for a major shift in mindset.”
