Prof. Muhsin Konuk, who made evaluations due to July 21 Junk Food Day, stated that consumers have started to prefer dates instead of ultra-processed snacks in recent years. He said that the main reasons for this are that dates provide natural energy, are rich in fiber, and do not contain artificial additives. Prof. Konuk said, "Dates are a strong alternative to refined sugar, but portion control is essential. Dates should not be seen as a miraculous food on their own, but they are a valuable part of a healthy diet."

Konuk noted that dates also have remarkable effects in the late stages of pregnancy, and scientific research indicates that they can support the birth process, stating, "Their use is especially recommended for pregnant women in the last weeks of pregnancy."

Prof. Muhsin Konuk, Rector's Advisor and Faculty Member in Molecular Biology and Genetics (English) at Üsküdar University, made evaluations due to July 21 Junk Food Day.

Dates are a clean-label natural energy source

Prof. Muhsin Konuk stated that consumers are moving away from ultra-processed snacks and turning to natural foods like dates, saying, "The main reason consumers are turning to dates instead of ultra-processed snacks is that dates provide natural and long-lasting energy without suddenly raising blood sugar, are rich in fiber, and are a 'clean-label' food completely free of artificial additives that trigger diseases like cancer and obesity."

Dates are a nutritious fruit but not a miraculous food

Konuk noted that dates have been referred to as a "superfood" in recent years, but this concept needs to be evaluated correctly, saying, "Dates are a highly nutritious fruit with a rich profile of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They should be consumed in moderation due to their high fructose and glucose content, which can rapidly raise blood sugar. They are a valuable supplement in a healthy diet but should not be seen as a miraculous 'superfood' on their own."

Prof. Konuk, stating that dates support the digestive system and provide a long-lasting feeling of fullness thanks to their high dietary fiber, continued as follows:

"Because it contains high dietary fiber (especially pectin), it regulates bowel movements, aids digestion, and facilitates weight control by keeping you full for a long time. It is rich in vitamin B6, which is beneficial for cell regeneration and the nervous system, and contains small amounts of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate (B9). It contains potassium, which helps balance heart rhythm and blood pressure; magnesium, which supports muscle and bone health; iron, which helps prevent anemia and increase the oxygen-carrying capacity in the body; and calcium and phosphorus, which play a critical role in strengthening bones and tooth enamel."

Dates can be an alternative to refined sugar, but attention should be paid to the quantity

Prof. Muhsin Konuk, stating that dates are a much more nutritious alternative than white sugar, said, "Dates can be a great alternative to refined sugar, with higher nutritional value due to the fibers, vitamins, and minerals they contain. However, it should not be forgotten that dates contain a high amount of natural sugar. If dates are to be used as a sugar alternative, they can be used as a puree or in the form of date extract/syrup in pastries, cakes, and desserts, as an alternative to white sugar."

Konuk, who also made important warnings regarding blood sugar control, said, "Daily portion control must be done. Approximately three medium-sized dates can be considered one serving. To prevent a sudden rise in blood sugar, it is recommended to consume them with oily seeds like walnuts and almonds, or with protein sources like milk and yogurt. These combinations slow down the rate at which sugar enters the bloodstream."

Can provide natural performance support for athletes

Prof. Konuk, pointing out that dates are a powerful energy source especially for individuals who exercise, also stated, "Thanks to their high fiber, natural sugars (fructose and glucose), potassium, and magnesium content, dates are an excellent natural energy source for athletes and active individuals. They are easy to digest, quickly replenish muscle glycogen stores without straining the stomach, and prevent energy drops throughout the day. When supported with protein and healthy fat sources alongside its carbohydrates, dates can transform into a perfect snack that accelerates muscle repair and extends satiety. Consuming 1 serving of dates 30-45 minutes before training provides the energy needed to take exercise performance to its peak."

Natural nutrition can contribute to reducing the risk of chronic diseases

Prof. Muhsin Konuk, stating that a nutrition model predominantly featuring natural and fiber-rich foods contributes to the prevention of many chronic diseases, said, "A nutrition model predominantly featuring natural and fibrous foods like dates helps reduce risks such as insulin resistance and obesity by decreasing refined sugar intake. It also regulates blood pressure, improves digestion, and suppresses chronic inflammation with its rich antioxidant structure. Thanks to its high potassium and soluble fiber content, it helps balance blood pressure and lower bad cholesterol (LDL). It offers a natural sweetener alternative, preventing sugar cravings. Dates have a low-to-medium glycemic index due to their fiber structure. This provides balanced energy without creating sudden fluctuations in blood sugar."

Contributes to the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's

Prof. Konuk, stating that it also offers significant contributions to gut health, continued, "Its high fiber content helps regulate bowel movements, preventing problems like constipation. Thanks to its prebiotic effects, it supports the development of beneficial gut bacteria. By staying in the stomach for a long time, it increases the feeling of fullness and contributes to reducing the consumption of unhealthy snacks. Powerful antioxidants such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids in its structure protect the body against damage from free radicals, contributing to the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's."

Dates can support the birth process

Prof. Muhsin Konuk stated that dates also have remarkable effects in the late stages of pregnancy, and that scientific research indicates they can support the birth process.

Prof. Konuk said, "Dates, thanks to their oxytocin-like compounds and stimulating effect on oxytocin receptors, activate uterine muscles. This natural mechanism can help the cervix open easily, accelerate labor, and reduce postpartum bleeding."

Prof. Konuk stated that scientific studies show positive results from date consumption in the last weeks of pregnancy, saying, "By stimulating the cervix, it can reduce the need for medical intervention (induced labor/oxytocin injection). It supports regular and efficient contractions during childbirth. After birth, it can facilitate uterine recovery, reducing the risk of bleeding. With its high fiber, vitamin, and mineral content, it provides the energy needed during labor. Date consumption in the late stages of pregnancy (usually the last few weeks) is frequently recommended by experts due to these hormonal effects."

The emphasis on dates in Surah Maryam is noteworthy

Prof. Muhsin Konuk, drawing attention to the fact that dates are also mentioned in sacred texts, reminded that in Surah Maryam, Mary was advised to eat dates during childbirth.

Prof. Konuk concluded his words by saying, "In Surah Maryam, verse 25, Mary is told, 'Shake towards yourself the trunk of the palm tree; it will let fall upon you fresh, ripe dates. So eat and drink and be content.' Cervical ripening in women who consumed dates was more favorable compared to the group that did not. The date fruit contains 13 vital substances and 5 types of vitamins, fatty acids, and sugars. Therefore, this mineral-rich fruit is recommended for pregnant women who need an energizing and nutritious food. Dates also affect estrogen and progesterone hormones, which are effective in preparing the uterus and ripening the cervix. Since the date fruit is an energizing and nutritious substance, its use is recommended for pregnant women during pregnancy, especially in the last weeks of gestation."
