Clinical Engineering Services Discussed…

Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services organized an online event on the topic of “Clinical Engineering Services”. Asst. Prof. Aybike Pirol from the Biomedical Device Technologies program at Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services and Biomedical Engineer Nalan Kılınç participated as speakers in the event, which was held within the scope of the University Culture course.

“Users should be trained on device usage”

Nalan Kılınç stated that the technical and administrative service processes of medical devices are defined as clinical engineering services in healthcare facilities; “It covers all activities to be carried out for the rational management of medical devices and biomedical engineering services used in the provision of healthcare services in healthcare facilities. It ensures the creation of a medical device inventory and the execution and coordination of tasks and operations related to the life cycle supply chain of biomedical services.”

“The inventory of medical devices is very important”

Kılınç, speaking about the maintenance of medical devices and the importance of it; “It is to regulate the procedures and principles regarding the design, classification, production, market placement, service provision, and supervision of medical devices and their accessories, in order to determine the basic requirements they must meet and to ensure the protection of patients, practitioners, users, and third parties against potential hazards to their health and safety during the use of these devices and accessories. Medical device maintenance procedures should be prepared annually and based on biomedical type by the relevant technical unit when planning maintenance. When determining maintenance periods, the durations specified in the device manufacturer's technical documents should be taken into account. In cases where no period is specified, maintenance must be performed at least once a year. Maintenance operations are important for preventing possible malfunctions, reducing risks to patients and employees, and minimizing downtime in case of a malfunction. Accordingly, periodic procedures are applied to medical devices before, during, and after service to prevent financial losses.”

“Problems with medical devices should not be ignored”

Nalan Kılınç, speaking about adverse event reporting, continued her remarks as follows; “An adverse event refers to situations that directly or indirectly lead to or could lead to the death of a patient, user, or other individuals, or cause or could cause a serious deterioration in health due to any error or deterioration in the characteristics, performance, labeling, or any inadequacy in the user manual of a medical device.”
