Within the scope of faculty seminars, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences organized a seminar titled 'Republican Era Philosophy Education'. In the program, where Assist. Prof. Dr. Baver Demircan from the Philosophy Department participated as a speaker, Demircan emphasized the need to understand Ottoman era philosophy.

During the faculty seminar held in the Socrates Hall of Üsküdar Üniversitesi South Campus, Assist. Prof. Dr. Baver Demircan made his presentation titled 'Republican Era Philosophy Education'.
Understanding Ottoman Era Philosophy is Necessary…
Assist. Prof. Dr. Baver Demircan from the Philosophy Department of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, by explaining the philosophical perspective in the Republican Era, emphasized the need to understand Ottoman era philosophy. Demircan stated that interest in philosophy increased in the Ottoman period through schools established with a Western understanding, and the institutionalization of philosophy in the Ottoman Empire occurred through Darülfünun.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Baver Demircan stated that with a series of reforms carried out in 1912, various arrangements were also made in Darülfünun, one of which was that philosophy began to be referred to as 'felsefe' instead of 'İlm-i Hikmet'. He mentioned that Darülfünun, which gained autonomy in 1924 during the Republican Era, took the name Istanbul University in 1933, and during this period, what was expected from higher education institutions was to provide education that would ensure the establishment of reforms among the public. Therefore, Darülfünun might have been closed on the grounds that it did not align with this goal.

The tradition of logical positivism became effective in philosophy departments…
Assist. Prof. Dr. Baver Demircan, pointing out that what Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said about philosophy at Samsun High School in the early Republican era aligned with the curriculum of Istanbul University's Philosophy Department, emphasized that this situation was realized thanks to the 1933 reform. He stated that with Professor Hans Reichenbach and many German academics coming to the Istanbul University Philosophy Department in 1933 due to persecutions in Nazi Germany, the tradition of logical positivism became effective in philosophy departments.
The event concluded after a question and answer session.
