Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Laboratory

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Food Technologies Laboratory is used as a common laboratory by Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services Food Technologies and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Programs.

Aims of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Laboratory

With the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Program, it is aimed to train auxiliary technical personnel who have the necessary knowledge for the protection, biological, ecological, genetic and systematic characteristics, cultivation and determination of the properties of medicinal and aromatic plants that have economic value in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.For these purposes, in the laboratory environment; within the scope of the Perfume Plants Evaluation course, dilution of pure ethyl alcohol with distilled water in desired proportions and the production of various perfume formulations from the diluted ethyl alcohol and essential oils obtained from plants are carried out with the students. In line with the request of each student, personalized perfume trials are carried out using essential oils of different plants.

Techniques Applied in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Laboratory

Within the scope of the phytotherapy course, students are shown how to make tinctures, ointments and creams. In addition, students are shown the preparation of tea preparations, hot oil extraction techniques from medicinal plants, infusion and decoction processes.

With the Food Technologies Program, it is aimed to train food technicians who have sufficient knowledge and equipment in food science and technology, who can use the knowledge and practices they have obtained effectively in areas such as food production, quality assurance, research and development studies and food control, who are skilled in production processes, who can apply food regulations and legislation, who know modern production technologies, who are prone to teamwork, and who follow professional ethics. For these purposes, microbiological media creation and bacterial cultivation, acidity and precipitate determination in milk and dairy products, acidity determination in oils, dry matter and organic matter determination in legumes, bakery products and spices are carried out in the environment of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Laboratory.
