SUAM (Health Application and Research Center) Director's Message

Neuropsychiatry is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases of the nervous system. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Our nervous system is the part of us that governs all our activities. The stimuli we receive from the environment through our five senses (i.e. our eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin) are interpreted by the nervous system. The nervous system determines how we react to these stimuli and the nervous system executes this reaction.

The nervous system manages our muscle movements; that is, it enables us to use our arms, to walk, to dance, to play soccer, to write. The nervous system also manages the functions of our internal organs. Under the management of our nervous system, we speak, understand, think, feel emotions, feel good, feel pleasure, make choices, make decisions, suppress unwarranted impulses, plan, organize our affairs. Memory, attention, intelligence, love, happiness, sexual desire are all qualities that the nervous system gives us.

When the nervous system malfunctions, problems such as paralysis, epilepsy, various movement disorders (e.g. tremors, inability to move quickly), numbness/tingling, headaches, speech disorders, loss of dexterity, forgetfulness, dementia, mental breakdown, anxiety, phobias, obsessions, suspiciousness, excesses, hallucinations, mental retardation occur. Neuropsychiatry deals with these problems. Neuropsychiatry is now divided into two separate branches: neurology and psychiatry.

Üsküdar University has adopted a holistic approach to human and human health as its mission since the day it was founded. For this reason, neurology, psychiatry and psychology disciplines work in close cooperation in our center. Physicians and psychologists, all of whom are faculty members, treat diseases of our brain and nervous system. The treatment of not only adults but also pediatric patients is among our center's areas of interest.

As a requirement of a holistic approach to human health, the center has expanded its field of activity to include physical therapy and rehabilitation, orthopedics, cardiology, and otolaryngology.

As important as providing health services, our center's other goal is to conduct scientific research. In addition to accepting and treating patients, our physicians and psychologists lecture at universities, write articles, make presentations in Turkey and abroad, and share their experiences and research with students and the scientific community.

In summary, it is a treatment, research and education institution that combines the mission of patient-oriented and personalized healthcare with the rigor of scientific observation.
