Perfusion Laboratory

Our Perfusion Laboratory; With devices such as heart-lung pump, heat exchanger, operating room table, operating room overhead lamp, which our students will encounter in the field after graduation, our students are offered the opportunity to learn most cases that may occur during their professional life in a real operating room environment, accompanied by a responsible perfusionist.

Purpose of Perfusion Program

Students of this program collaborate with specialists such as cardiovascular surgeons and anesthesiologists:

-Cardiopulmonary support devices used in cardiac surgeries,

- They will have the ability to prepare and operate heart-lung support devices used in circulatory and respiratory failure.

Qualifications of Perfusionist

  • Manages the heart-lung machine, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist devices.
  • Performs preoperative perfusion preparation.
  • During cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal circulation, monitors the patient's physiologic parameters, blood gases and blood biochemistry results and anticoagulation, makes necessary interventions and keeps relevant records.
  • Performs necessary procedures related to myocardial protection such as cardioplegia administration.
  • Assists in the preservation of donor tissues and organs when necessary.
  • Performs hemofiltration- ultrafiltration and apheresis applications.
  • Performs hypothermia-hyperthermia applications and body temperature regulation.
  • Performs transfusion of blood and blood products through extracorporeal circulation equipment and the application of drugs and medical agents deemed necessary by specialist physicians.
  • Provides isolated organ and extremity perfusion.
  • Monitoring and analyzing blood gases and blood biochemistry and performing necessary interventions.
  • Actively participates in preoperative patient preparation and postoperative mortality and morbidity meetings.
  • Produces platelet gel when necessary.
  • Decides on the necessary materials and techniques to provide extracorporeal circulatory functions in consultation with the physician.
  • Provides support in the transportation of the patient with extracorporeal circulatory support.
  • Keeps patient records related to extracorporeal circulatory systems and patient circulation.
  • Supports the training and competence/performance evaluation of perfusionists, perfusionist candidates and other medical personnel regarding extracorporeal circulatory systems.
  • Takes part in quality control studies.
  • Participates in scientific activities related to the field, monitors and evaluates scientific publications in order to ensure professional development.
  • Complies with the rules of professional ethics.
  • Shows sensitivity to patient rights.

Perfusionist Employment Opportunities

Those who successfully complete the perfusion program can work in the public and private sectors, in hospitals where heart surgery and organ transplantation are performed, as well as take part in scientific researches and find employment opportunities in biomedical device companies.

Perfusionist Working Areas

Perfusionists can work in operating room units of private and public hospitals, biomedical device manufacturing companies; as academicians in foundation and state universities.
