Assoc. Prof. Dr. Müge Ensari Özay: “As ARGEYEP, we will continue to provide all kinds of support”

Üsküdar University R&D and Innovation Policies Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Müge Ensari Özay delivered the opening speeches of the program.

Özay; “Previously, we shared data on our Scopus publications from the last 5 years. As of January, 30 new Scopus publications have been added, bringing us to a total of 1171 publications. We expect this number to increase further in the coming months. We have currently gained significant momentum, and we observe that a large portion of our publications are concentrated in the field of medicine. We are re-presenting the previously shared table after updating it. We are also providing the project numbers for the years 2023-2024 on a faculty basis, and we aim for these projects to increase even further in 2025. To strengthen academic work, we prioritize that all our faculty members, research assistants, and students who have completed their doctoral qualifications undertake at least one project. In this process, as ARGEYEP, we will continue to provide all kinds of support.” said.

Prof. Dr. Osman Çerezci: “We aim to carry out joint projects with municipalities”

Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Osman Çerezci gave a presentation titled “Development of Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Package and Its Comparison with Electromagnetic Measurement Data.”

Çerezci; “Recently, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports are being prepared for the rapidly increasing wind power plants in our country. In this process, we are asked for support in measuring electromagnetic radiation levels and identifying possible adverse effects. In this context, we aim to conduct joint projects with municipalities, perform electromagnetic field measurements, and evaluate the results according to legal limits. We also have plans to apply for international projects and produce academic publications. We provide support to companies manufacturing electronic devices on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues and evaluate the compliance of electromagnetic radiation emitted by medical devices used in hospitals with European standards. Especially in comprehensive EIA reports prepared for wind power plants, our analyses regarding electromagnetic effects are included, and we continue our work in this field.” he said.

Prof. Dr. Barış Metin: “We are developing virtual reality-based games that enable early diagnosis of Alzheimer's patients”

Üsküdar University Institute of Health Sciences, Head of Neuroscience Department Prof. Dr. Barış Metin gave a presentation titled “Early Stage Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease Using Spatial Data and EEG Data Obtained from VR-Based Cognitive Serious Games with Artificial Intelligence.”

Metin; “As a university, we have partnered in a project under the Industrial R&D Support Program. In this project, we are developing virtual reality (VR)-based games that enable early diagnosis and cognitive assessment of Alzheimer's patients. Such games are referred to as ‘serious games’ in the literature. Within the scope of the project, patients will undergo cognitive tests in a VR environment, and EEG data will be collected. Subsequently, the stage of the disease will be analyzed with the support of artificial intelligence. Three different groups will be studied: patients with mild and moderate Alzheimer's, individuals with mild cognitive impairment, and healthy individuals as a control group. Computer engineers, neuropsychologists, clinicians, and psychiatrists from our university are involved in the project. The aim of the project is to examine the compatibility of VR games with standard neuropsychological tests and to make early diagnosis of the disease more accurate with artificial intelligence.” he said.

Following Prof. Dr. Barış Metin's presentation, Umut Yılmaz from IoTTech Bilişim Danışmanlık Şirketi shared the project details with the participants.

Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Yazıcı: “We aim to examine the presence of women in philosophy”

Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Head of Philosophy Department Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Yazıcı presented her project titled “Women in Philosophy on the 100th Anniversary of the Republic: The Presence of Women in Philosophy Education and Research Studies in Higher Education.”

Yazıcı; “In this project, we aim to examine the presence of women in academia and philosophy and to offer suggestions for its development. The Republic and philosophy are two mutually nourishing fields, which is why we are shaping the project through this interaction. Our study consists of four dimensions. Firstly, we examine the numerical presence of women in academia. Secondly, we evaluate what is understood when referring to women in philosophy; how it is addressed in areas such as gender equality, epistemology, and ethics. In the third stage, we will conduct field research by interviewing at least 20-30 of the 66 philosophy departments in Turkey to understand the position of women in academia. Finally, we will organize a workshop to share these findings with academics and students and develop future-oriented recommendations. This project also aims to contribute to qualified education, gender equality, and increased diversity within the scope of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.” she stated.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Özçetin: “Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases after stroke”

Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Psychology Department Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Özçetin gave a presentation titled “Preparation of Gabapentin Carbon Quantum Dot and Comparison of Its Efficacy on Pentylenetetrazol-Induced Epileptic Seizures with Standard Active Substance.”

Özçetin; “Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases, affecting approximately 2% of the world's population and occurring most frequently after stroke. Existing treatments require continuous medication and may lose effectiveness over time, leading to high costs and side effects. In this study, we aimed to test the effect of Gabapentin carbon quantum dots on epileptic seizures. We created an epilepsy model with pentylenetetrazol in experimental animals and compared the carbon quantum dot we developed with standard Gabapentin. We have three main goals: to synthesize and characterize the Gabapentin carbon quantum dot; to evaluate the effect of this new formula on epileptic seizures and compare it with standard Gabapentin; and to examine the presence and fluorescent activity of carbon quantum dots in brain tissues after the experiment. Our study aims to develop innovative and effective approaches in epilepsy treatment.” she stated.

Dr. Gülcan Ayral: “Our aim is to ensure the adaptation process and integration of our international students through support, training, and practices; and to continuously improve the process with scientific methods and studies”

Üsküdar University Health, Culture, and Sports Department, International Student Relations Manager Dr. Gülcan Ayral, gave a presentation titled “The Effect of the Target Friendship Program on International Student Adaptation.”

Ayral; “The balance of the institution as an open system, meaning its harmonious operation with its sub- and super-systems, is one of the important criteria for sustainability. One of the fundamental conditions for achieving this balance in higher education institutions is for students, as elements of the sub-system, to continue their educational lives within a structure that supports their social adaptation. Because if a part of the system is experiencing problems, it is not possible for the main system to be problem-free. Based on this, we have completed the second phase of our scientific research project titled “The Effect of Institutional Social Adaptation Studies for International Students on Loneliness and Anxiety.” Within the scope of the project, we are revealing the effects of the managerial design, organizational structure, training, and applications on students' adaptation, satisfaction, loneliness, and anxiety using various scientific scales and methods. With the data we have obtained, we strive to strengthen the program structure with a continuous improvement approach, ensure the adaptation of our students, and provide input to institutional management decisions with very valuable student feedback.” she said.

A 3rd-year Computer Engineering student also gave a presentation

Within the scope of the launch meeting, Aksel Deniz Akgül, a young entrepreneur and 3rd-year Computer Engineering student at Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, gave a presentation titled “ADAxy Technology.” In this context, he shared the project he was carrying out with the participants.

After the project presentations concluded, Üsküdar University Founding Rector and Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan presented sapling certificates to the project owners.

The project launch meeting, organized for the third time by Üsküdar University, concluded with a group photo session after participants' questions were answered.
