Head of the Computer Engineering Department at Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Prof. Burhan Pektaş, evaluated the future of computer engineering in the age of artificial intelligence and new career areas awaiting graduates.
In the age of artificial intelligence, well-trained engineers will be even more valuable
Prof. Burhan Pektaş noted that computer engineering maintains its place among the most powerful and strategic professions of the future, in an era where artificial intelligence is transforming almost every sector, especially health, finance, defense industry, education, and manufacturing, and said, “According to experts, the development of artificial intelligence's code-writing ability, rather than reducing the need for computer engineers, will further increase the value of well-trained engineers who can correctly use artificial intelligence and have strong problem-solving skills.”
“Artificial intelligence will change the way engineers work, not replace them”
Prof. Pektaş pointed out that the increasing ability of artificial intelligence systems to write code has brought discussions about a potential decrease in the need for computer engineers, adding, “However, it should be noted that computer engineering is not just about writing code. Correctly defining a problem, designing suitable algorithms and architectures, developing secure and scalable systems, and evaluating the accuracy and security of code generated by artificial intelligence still require strong engineering knowledge. Therefore, the engineer profile that will stand out in the future will not be one that competes with artificial intelligence, but rather an engineer who can transform artificial intelligence into an engineering tool. Graduates who know coding, but also possess mathematical thinking, algorithm development, system design, and problem-solving skills, are expected to gain a significant advantage in the business world,' he stated.”
Career options are not limited to software
Prof. Pektaş explained that computer engineering graduates today have career opportunities not only in software development but also across a very wide range of sectors, saying, “Cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, cloud computing, big data, robotics, internet of things, and gaming technologies are among the leading areas. In addition, the need for computer engineers is increasing in sectors such as defense industry, finance and fintech, health technologies, automotive, telecommunications, and e-commerce. Especially with the use of artificial intelligence in different sectors, specialized fields such as artificial intelligence engineering, data engineering, cybersecurity, and autonomous systems are expected to gain more importance in the coming years.'”
What will the job market be like in four years?
Prof. Pektaş stated that by the time a student starting computer engineering today graduates, artificial intelligence and automation are expected to significantly change ways of working, adding, “However, this change is also predicted to bring new job areas. Particularly, areas such as the development and management of artificial intelligence systems, data analytics, cybersecurity, cloud and edge computing, robotics and autonomous systems, AI-supported software development, and AI security are expected to come to the fore. Therefore, the computer engineer of the future will not only be a ‘coder’; they will be an expert who defines problems, selects technologies, manages artificial intelligence systems, evaluates results, and ensures the safe, ethical, and efficient use of technology. Artificial intelligence is not threatening the future of computer engineering; rather, it is redefining the boundaries of the profession,' he concluded.”
