The ninth session of the seminar series titled “Entangled Histories: Borders and Cultural Encounters from the Medieval to the Contemporary Era,” organized in collaboration between Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication and the University of Insubria, was held. The online event, titled “Beguinal Echoes in a Poem by Thomas Hoccleve,” featured Dario Capelli, a specialist in Germanic Philology from the University of Urbino Carlo Bo in Italy. The seminar examined reflections of the Beguine tradition in the works of the English poet Thomas Hoccleve.

The seminar, conducted online under the coordination of Dr. Maria Pia Ester Cristaldi, faculty member of the Department of Journalism at Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, brought together participants from various professional backgrounds with expertise in the field.

Literary and historical traces of the beguine tradition were shared

Dario Capelli shared literary and historical traces of the Beguine tradition based on a relatively understudied section of Hoccleve’s 1415 address titled “To Sir John Oldcastle.”

A multidimensional academic discussion environment was provided

In his presentation focusing on late medieval Europe, Capelli analyzed topics such as gender relations, linguistic boundaries, and the role of lay women in theological thought through literature.

The seminar provided a multidimensional academic discussion environment that brought together the disciplines of literature and history.

Continuing until the summer months

The Entangled Histories seminar series, which will continue until the summer months, will proceed with academic contributions from various disciplines and remain open to public participation.
