Risk in Housing

Prof. Dr. Osman Çerezci, Dean of Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, known for his research on electromagnetic pollution, stated, 'There is risk in residences under high-voltage power lines.'

Prof. Dr. Osman Çerezci made the following statement on the subject: 'There is risk in residences under high-voltage power lines. This is not at the level of danger, but it is a scientifically known fact that it carries a certain negativity. Electromagnetic pollution has no taste, no smell, and cannot be detected. Children and the elderly are most affected. The World Health Organization has added electromagnetic pollution to its list of carcinogenic factors. Europe is quite sensitive on this issue. Since 2004, it has made it mandatory for factories and institutions employing more than 5 workers to conduct measurements. While limit values are very low in Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, they are very high in our country. Boundary values should be lowered by making correct plans. International organizations declare the limit value as 200 microteslas. Countries can set a value between zero and 200 as a limit. In our country, 200 microteslas is directly applied as the limit value. For example, Switzerland takes 1 microtesla as the limit value. Some countries adopt 0.4 microteslas as the limit value. The reason for this is to reduce health risks. On the other hand, it is beneficial to maintain a distance of 30-50 meters, depending on the power carried by the line.'
