'Turkey ranks first in the world'
Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, in his presentation to the commission members, stated the necessity of understanding whether violence is a consequence or a cause.
Emphasizing the importance of examining the issue not only from a legal or women's rights perspective but also from a family perspective, Tarhan stated that according to an OECD report from 2019, Turkey ranks first in the world for violence against women or cohabiting partners.
Tarhan noted that according to this report, high-income countries such as the USA, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, and Norway follow Turkey. Tarhan also touched upon some statistics, indicating that while the marriage rate in Turkey increased by 1.6 percent between 2001 and 2018, the divorce rate rose by 54 percent.
Tarhan stated that the number of five-person households in Turkey steadily decreased from 1994 to 2016. Tarhan also drew attention to how social media has changed generations, adding that according to a study, young people view their families as a 'hindrance'.

Tarhan explained that many developed countries say, 'You don't invest in a structure that is 50 percent unsuccessful,' and stated that according to 2016 data, out-of-wedlock birth rates were 69 percent in Iceland, 56.2 percent in Norway, 54.9 percent in Sweden, 44.9 percent in Finland, 59.7 percent in France, and 2.9 percent in Turkey.
Tarhan stated that women and men are not biologically equal, but they should be equal in rights and opportunities.
