Candidates Should First Know Themselves
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, mentioning that there are two important decisions in a person's life, stated that one is career choice and the other is spouse selection. Tarhan said; “There are two important decisions in a person’s life. One is choosing a spouse, and the other is choosing a profession. The more thoroughly they think about these two choices and the more correct decisions they make, the healthier their future years will be. Therefore, career choice is important for them. When making career choices, it is especially beneficial for them to pay attention to the following: first, they must know themselves, their personal characteristics, their strengths, whether they are more inclined towards social fields or arts, artistic fields, or natural sciences, health-related fields; these need to be analyzed. For this, as Üsküdar Üniversitesi, we have a short test called ‘Holland’ on our website, used by educators, to make it easier. When a person fills out the questions there, it provides information about their inclination towards a certain field. We determine the person’s own characteristics, and then they need to thoroughly analyze the professions they are considering. What are the difficult aspects of these professions, and what are the easy ones? An analysis of the observations and experiences of those who live their lives with that profession is needed. After this is done, they must succeed in establishing a connection between their personal characteristics and the professions they are considering.”
“Proper Guidance Protects Individuals from Error”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drawing attention to the need for prospective students to seek help from knowledgeable people during the preference period, stated that a healthier decision can be made with such assistance. Tarhan said; “Career choice has become a branch of science in education faculties because professions have multiplied and specialized. Because they are specialized, they have details. In such situations, proper guidance protects individuals from error. Indeed, studies conducted on university students show that forty percent say they are in a field they don't like. In fact, fifty-two percent want to change after entering university. Two million people take the exam, and almost one-third of them want to change their profession. If they make the right decision at the beginning, there will be no need for this. For this, they need to seek help from an expert. If a person can get help this way, they can make a correct, healthier decision. Taking the family's opinion is also important here. During the preference period, they go to preference counselors and make more accurate decisions with YKS robots or preference counselors based on their scores, success rankings, and success rates in their targeted fields. If they take responsibility for their own decision, they will overcome the obstacles ahead more easily. Life itself means overcoming obstacles. As one overcomes obstacles, one develops. Difficulties and obstacles are part of growth. Therefore, there is no profession where everything is rosy without difficulties. The paths to success in life are not paved with flowers but with stony roads full of obstacles. Those obstacles are not just hindrances for us; they are situations to be overcome. If one sees it this way, they will have developed, matured, and overcome difficulties both in university and in life. The purpose of educational life is not just to provide technical and academic skills but also to foster social and emotional skills and teach human relations.”
“We Ranked One Hundred and First Among Foundation Universities Worldwide”
Tarhan provided information about the undergraduate and associate degree programs offered at Üsküdar Üniversitesi's 5 different campuses; “We especially emphasize quality. We started prioritizing quality a long time ago. We developed special software for our students and academics. By creating an online communication network between students and instructors, we enabled students and academics to easily meet, submit assignments, and conduct online advising through special software within the ‘STIX’ system. We have been using this for 7-8 years. The other is a system called UKS, we purchased software called the university quality system. Currently, all meetings, all events held at the university are entered there, and everything is tracked and reported as an activity calendar tracking system. As a result, we ranked one hundred and first among foundation universities worldwide. We have been implementing this for a long time and have reaped its benefits very well. We strive for quality, learning, and making the most of the resources at our disposal.”
“We Strive to Educate Our Students in the Best Possible Way”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, discussing the advantages of Üsküdar Üniversitesi's central location, its academic staff, and Erasmus opportunities; “It is accessible from everywhere, an easy place in terms of transportation. A city university within the city. The academic staff is also very important. They should definitely check the academic staff of the departments. Because good education comes with good instructors. That is, the better the instructors, the more productive the education. Just as good football is played with good players, good education happens with good instructors. We also advise them to look at the university's international achievements. In this regard, as Üsküdar Üniversitesi, we are a participant in several serious international platforms. We are progressing towards becoming a leading higher education institution in the world. We are the only higher education institution from Turkey participating in the G20 Summit, where topics of importance to the whole world are discussed. Our business partnerships and compliance with standards with worldwide institutions and organizations such as the United Nations (UN), SBMT, and UNESCO are commendable. We have achieved good rankings from globally recognized organizations like THE (Times Higher Education) and Scimago Rankings. With the TURQUALITY support program, we continue our efforts to become a brand of value abroad. International collaborations like these are very important, and we have Erasmus agreements with over 500 universities. As Üsküdar Üniversitesi, we are doing our best and striving to educate our students in the best possible way.”
“Last Year, 11 of Our Students Simultaneously Received Projects from TÜBİTAK”
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that universities not only provide vocational training but also teach science and transform knowledge into products; “Universities do not only provide vocational training. They teach science and transform knowledge into products. At the same time, these third-generation universities have a fourth function; they inform society. That is why we have started to give importance to social impact in these indices. We attach importance to these, and we have many student projects. Last year, 11 of our students simultaneously received projects from TÜBİTAK. Together with their supervising professors, we became the university that received the most projects from TÜBİTAK in that period. All these are for our students; we placed the project culture course in the second year. In the third year, we offer courses related to projects. In the fourth year, we have every student complete a graduation project. Furthermore, as you know, Turkey will go into space. We will go into space, and our genetics professors have taken on the task of genetic examination related to space.”
