Üsküdar Üniversitesi Publications has re-released "Psychiatrie" (Psychiatry), a historically significant work penned by Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Uzman, the physician who established Turkey's first modern mental health hospital, bringing it back to readers after many years. Written by Uzman with the most up-to-date information of its time to serve as a textbook for Psychology students, the work is known as one of the first to be authored in this field. The work, edited and prepared for publication by an expert team, including Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, was met with excitement by readers interested in the field.
Reprinted after 70 years…
One of Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Uzman's most important works, "Psychiatrie," who played a significant role in establishing the first serology, neuropathology, and experimental psychology laboratories in Turkey, has finally met readers with a new edition.
The book was written under the difficult conditions of the war years
In his introduction to the work in 1944, Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Uzman stated that the book was written during wartime, drawing attention to the difficulties experienced at that time: "We can call this book a wartime edition. Those who consider the hardships during the war will excuse the book's shortcomings. Paper is scarce and very expensive... So is printing... And there is the difficulty of departing from the style and terminology we are accustomed to... Then the necessity of preparing a textbook for students before the academic year begins... And the author bearing the burden of all these, and corrections, almost single-handedly... This is sufficient excuse."
Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan wrote the book's foreword
The work, which was brought to readers under very difficult conditions in its time, has now been re-edited and taken its place on the shelves. Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who penned the book's foreword, described Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Uzman as "the teacher of teachers." In the book's foreword, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated:
He was doing the best of his time in psychiatric treatments…
"We decided to make a facsimile of his book on Modern Psychiatry. As exactly 70 years have passed, there are no longer any obstacles regarding copyright, intellectual, and industrial rights.
He was doing the best of his time in psychiatric treatments. With great effort and dedication, he transformed Topbaşı Bimarhanesi into Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital. It is even said that during that period, when İsmet İnönü resisted, Uzman convinced him by saying, 'Pasha, you closed the dervish lodges, we have started doing their work, our beds are not enough.'
The facsimile of a book by a scientist who was a master of his profession and lectured at Istanbul University during the Republican era will have been published among university publications and reached enthusiasts. It has been an honor for us to present this to the Turkish Psychiatry community and to the interest of medical historians.
I extend my gratitude to my dear 50-year friend Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tanrıdağ, who preserved the original book in his archive and presented it to us, and to all who contributed.”
