Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Health Sciences Head of the Department of Speech and Language Therapy Prof. Dr. Ahmet Konrot, met with educators within the scope of the "Inclusive Education" program organized by Güngören District Directorate of National Education.
In the program held for educators via Instagram, Konrot made important evaluations regarding the field of speech and language therapy.
"Our profession is generally related to the field of communication"
Speaking about Speech and Language Therapists, Konrot said; "We briefly call ourselves speech and language therapists, but actually the problem is not limited to speech and language. Our professional field is generally related to the field of communication. In other words, it is a professional field that deals with the difficulties we encounter in communication between people. When we talk about communication, we refer to a person's intentional interaction with their environment. From the moment we are born, we are in interaction with the environment we are born into. But there are also some stimuli coming to us from the environment, and by taking some clues from these stimuli, we try to relate them in our minds in some way, trying to grasp what kind of world we have come into. We try to grasp who we are."
"Some beings around us want to interact with us intentionally"
Speaking about our interaction with the environment, Konrot said; "There are two people who caused us to come into a world we don't know, even though they know us. We discover that they are our mother and father, that the people around us are human, that there are living beings, etc. We have to discover what kind of universe we are born into. Therefore, from the moment we are born, one of our most important tasks and missions is to recognize the universe we are in. Some beings around us want to interact with us intentionally. They would say things while we were looking at the ceiling in our swaddling clothes. Therefore, there are some who are intentionally interacting with us. We have to understand what this is." he stated.
"Communication is trying to bring our thoughts to life in the minds of others"
Touching upon the subject of communication in his speech, Konrot said; "We have to try to distinguish not only the world we are born into, but also what kind of universe this is, what an extremely abstract communication system that represents the objects, beings, movements occurring in the world it is born into, and the relationship between them, actually is. What we experience from the moment we are born is a phase where, on one hand, we learn about the universe we live in, and on the other hand, how this universe is represented. In this process, alongside our physical and mental development, and in parallel with it, we are in a process of understanding the system in which we have this intentional interaction and learning how to express it. Some problems also arise in this process. Communication is trying to bring our thoughts to life in the minds of others. But since I cannot do this directly, I can express my thoughts to you using a tool. This tool I use is the utilization of sounds. We convey our thoughts by arranging sounds one after another." he stated.
