Prof. Dr. Arıboğan: “We are entering the era of the Internet of Things”

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Arıboğan was a guest at the Career Days event titled “Career Opportunities in a Changing World,” organized by Doğa Schools. Arıboğan stated that machine usage was first supported by electronics and then transitioned to digital, saying: “Vacuum cleaners and washing machines first became electronic, then we moved to digital. We started giving commands by planning everything in advance. Now we are entering a world where there is the Internet of Things. These machines will now talk to each other.”

“Being in the right place is important for success”

Arıboğan stated that change is the dynamic of social life; “Being in the right place is important for life to flow correctly and for success to come. It is very important for students to know themselves well; I succeeded because I did what I loved. Change is actually the dynamic of all social life; nothing remains unchanged. In some periods of history, the pace of change accelerates. This has been very intense, especially in the last 50-100 years. Technology also has an accelerating effect on our lives. Humanity has gained experience through a lot of work and made human civilization's life easier.”

“We are entering the era of the Internet of Things”

Arıboğan stated that machine usage was supported by electronics after the industrial era; “Vacuum cleaners and washing machines first became electronic, then we moved to digital. We started giving commands by planning everything in advance. Now we are entering a world where there is the Internet of Things. These will talk to each other. Your refrigerator will send a message to your washing machine, your washing machine will go to your car, and there will be a system of machines talking from the car to your office. They will design a life for themselves. For some, this is a very frightening period. The last period of human civilization. However, some very important scientists say, ‘We are entering the most magnificent period of human civilization.’ They say, ‘We will solve all unsolved health problems, humans will not have a problem called old age, they will not have a problem called weakness, we will solve all of these with genetic science.’ At the beginning of the 20th century, the average human life expectancy was 50 years, now it has risen to 80 years. This promises these young people 150 years. This is the new order.”

The main issue is not perfection, but having been made by human hands”

Arıboğan, emphasizing the importance of human labor; “We must be people who know one subject very well, but also know everything, good and bad. We call these individuals 'T-shaped people'. Our advice to young people is always this. We also change our education curricula accordingly. General education, literature, music, art, culture – these are all very valuable things. Do you know what professions will be valuable? For example, you buy a lace tablecloth to put on a table. If you have this made by a machine, this lace knit can be made perfectly in 2 minutes in the most beautiful way. Its value is 5 TL. But when you go to Aunt Aysel, she knits that lace cloth with her crochet hook, and the cloth has imperfections. But because it is handmade, its price is 5 thousand TL. The main issue is not perfection. What creates value is having been made by human hands. Whatever you give value to, becomes valuable.”
