An event titled 'Those Who Left Their Mark in Üsküdar: Hilmi Türkmen' was organized by the Leaders of the Future Club, affiliated with Üsküdar University's Department of Health, Culture and Sports (HCS). Hilmi Türkmen, the former President of Üsküdar Municipality, who met with the students, offered advice on various topics, from his municipal experience to politics, urban transformation, and issues concerning youth.  

The event, held in the Socrates Hall of the South Campus E Block, attracted significant interest.

20 years of effort and experience in Üsküdar…

In his speech, Hilmi Türkmen, the former President of Üsküdar Municipality, referred to his approximately 20 years of municipal experience in Üsküdar, and stated that they implemented many projects with a social municipal understanding during this period. Türkmen stated that sports facilities, libraries, parks, and social living areas were increased in the district, and emphasized that they prioritized investments targeting youth.

Türkmen emphasized that they carried out numerous projects during his tenure in Üsküdar, and stated that social municipalism encompasses not only financial aid but also services that touch people's daily lives. He stated that this approach offered important examples for young people.

Creating earthquake-resistant cities is of great importance!

In the program, Türkmen also touched upon the reality of earthquakes in Istanbul, noting that urban transformation is one of Türkiye's most significant issues. Türkmen stated that the old building stock in Türkiye poses a serious risk, and mentioned that during his municipal terms, zoning plans were updated in Üsküdar to accelerate urban transformation.

Türkmen stated that zoning plans form the basic infrastructure of the transformation process, and expressed that the lack of information among citizens regarding transformation and their economic expectations sometimes complicate this process. He added that creating earthquake-resistant cities is of great importance for both local governments and citizens.

Hilmi Türkmen: "University years should be utilized productively"

In his speech, Hilmi Türkmen also gave messages to young people. Türkmen emphasized that university years should be well utilized, and stated that students should not be content with just getting a diploma.

Türkmen advised young people to learn foreign languages, develop themselves in different fields, and engage in cultural activities, stating that time is one of the most valuable resources and that young people should utilize this period as productively as possible.

After answering questions from the students, the event concluded with the presentation of a plaque to Hilmi Türkmen and a group photo session.
