Prof. Dr. Güler Cimete: “They should not miss clinical practices”
Head of the Midwifery Department Prof. Dr. Güler Cimete first provided information about the Midwifery department to students and families.
Cimete said; “In the first year, students begin to get to know both the profession and people through classroom lectures, because we will be serving people. Naturally, they first need to understand people. When they reach the second year, they will start learning courses related to their profession. In addition to internal medicine and surgical diseases, they will begin to learn midwifery care for a healthy pregnant woman, which is central to their profession. This means they will start entering the midwifery profession in their second year. ‘How do midwives provide care for a healthy pregnant woman? What do they do?’ will be learned both in the classroom and in the laboratory. Next year, they will also start going to hospitals for clinical practices. In their second year, they will gain knowledge and skills by providing care for both healthy and problematic pregnancies. When they reach their third year, alongside some supportive courses, they will continue to develop their birth knowledge and skills by taking courses on healthy delivery as a core midwifery course, or on delivery in risky pregnancies for those cases. At that very moment, they will take a course on children with newborns. They will go to hospitals for clinical practices for both delivery and child care. When they reach their fourth year, we call them ‘Interns’; by then, they will have acquired basic knowledge and skills. They need to be able to work more independently. They will delve deeper into the comprehensive knowledge they have learned about both pregnancy and birth. The fourth year will be a year where they are more knowledgeable, skilled, experienced, and actively participate in clinical learning. Our expectations from students are absolutely to attend their theoretical courses, not to miss laboratories, and not to miss clinical practices.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Tuğba Yılmaz Esencan: “I am with our students in developing their birth skills”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Tuğba Yılmaz Esencan spoke about the excitement students feel for the birth course. Esencan said; “I teach the birth course for 3rd-year midwifery students. I also participate in the birth course practices. I am with our students in developing their birth skills. The birth course is one of the most exciting courses for midwifery students. Especially for some of our students, they eagerly anticipate this course, even starting from their first year, wondering what the birth course will be like, what happens during childbirth, with excitement and curiosity. That’s why we are progressing on this path with this excitement together with my students.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayça Demir Yıldırım: “We strive to develop our students in every sense”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayça Demir Yıldırım mentioned that they strive to develop students’ manual skills, as well as their social and communication skills. Yıldırım said; “We try to develop our students not only in a technical sense but in every sense. We try to improve their manual skills, social, and communication skills. I can say you cannot be proud enough of your children because when they graduate, they will all become public health professionals. We are trying to equip them with the skills to do their best to improve the health of this society. Every student in the Midwifery department of Üsküdar Üniversitesi is also an advocate for women's rights. During the pandemic, midwives played a significant role, so your children will be the ones working in the field for the health of society in such situations.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Günay Arslan: “I believe they will be very good colleagues in the future”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Günay Arslan shared her thoughts with the students. Arslan said; “If our students take what Güler Hoca said into account, I believe they will be very good colleagues in the future. They are truly studying in a very good department at a very good university. In this respect, they are very lucky. All of you are very precious to us.”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Akdemir: “We receive appreciation from hospitals”
Asst. Prof. Dr. Arzu Akdemir spoke about midwifery department students. Akdemir said; “Our fourth-year students go for clinical practice three days a week, and I accompany them in these clinical practices in hospitals, just like our other instructors. Fourth-year students will be our colleagues in a few months. It is a period from the first year where they will reap the benefits of both theoretical and practical lessons. We see them reaping the benefits they gained in clinical practices. Especially as a university, we arrange internships in different hospitals. We receive appreciation from hospitals, so they are all very valuable.”
The meeting concluded after answering the questions from the parents.
