The Topic of Hypnosis Talks Was Dental Phobia and Stress Management

Babat made evaluations regarding the topic of “Dental Phobia and Stress Management Techniques in Dental Practice and the Importance of Hypnotic Language Patterns in Slow Dentistry.”

“It is not possible to define it as a simple brain wave”

Stating that there is no clear definition that can clearly define or fully explain hypnosis to date, Dt. Seyfettin Babat said; “Some researchers say that it is difficult to reach concrete evidence of hypnosis today. That is why they believe the search for neurobiological evidence should be abandoned. Currently, it is not possible to define hypnosis as a simple brain wave, nor does a neurochemical marker seem likely to define hypnosis.”

“It does not seem possible for it to occur outside of sociological conditions”

Dt. Babat stated that hypnosis occurs in a social environment and a social context, adding, “Hypnosis can best be described as a complex system involving changes in brain systems determined by the social context and the influence of hypnosis. In fact, hypnotic communication, the relationship between the person receiving hypnosis and the person applying hypnosis, is a form of communication and takes place in a social environment within a social context. It does not seem possible for this to occur outside of certain sociological conditions. Achieving harmony between neurobiological and socio-cognitive perspectives, in particular, will advance the concept of hypnosis and appears to be a great opportunity to further humanitarian applications.”

Hypnosis is not a form of trance!

Drawing attention to the fact that hypnosis applied in dental treatment is not a state of trance, Dt. Seyfettin Babat noted; “Hypnosis in dentistry involves a positive environment, a hypnotic language used to distract, and deep hypnotic applications that we would only use in very advanced, complicated cases. Under normal circumstances, providing a positive environment and using hypnotic language for distraction is more than sufficient for the use of hypnosis in dentistry. Furthermore, we need to emphasize that hypnosis is not a form of trance. Simply focusing our patient's attention and suggesting a calm, pleasant environment can also be considered hypnosis. And translating one's language into a positive, hypnotic one helps transform the environment into one where comfortable communication can be established and desired changes can be achieved.”
