The attempt of sociology to resemble natural sciences was discussed

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Bilgili discussed sociology's search for identity during its emergence as a scientific discipline and its efforts to resemble natural sciences.

Bilgili also stated that Durkheim's work 'Suicide' is valuable in showing how sociology strives to be a science, emphasizing that sociology is constantly trying to prove why it should exist and why it is an important field. Bilgili added; “Suicide is the most individual act we know. It is so individual that a person doesn't even tell their closest ones they will commit suicide; they only leave a note. However, the dynamics within society determine how many people will commit suicide. What makes the book 'Suicide' special is how it tries to convince us.”

The endeavor of social sciences to gain approval from natural sciences was discussed

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Bilgili emphasized that the endeavor of social sciences to gain approval from natural sciences is a tension experienced in the process of this field finding its own originality.

Bilgili stated that the people who build science are also part of this process with their own prejudices, passions, and desires.
The event concluded after participants' questions were answered.
