Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication Head of the Department of Cartoon and Animation, Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş moderated the event titled “Ex Libris Studies”, which featured Dr. Gökhan Okur, Assist. Prof. Dr. Salih Denli, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sezin Türk Kaya, and Graphic Designer İsmail Aslan as speakers.
“The function of ex libris has changed since its inception”
Evaluating ex libris and communication, Dr. Okur stated; “The person who commissions the ex libris is considered the ‘source’, the artist the ‘sender’, the ex libris itself the ‘communication tool’, and those who use the book in which it is placed are the ‘receivers’. At first glance, this situation creates the impression that ex libris can be evaluated within such a communication model. The reason is its dominant artistic aspect. Its current function is the role it plays in the field of art and design. The function of ex libris has changed since its inception.” he said.
“Art forms influenced ex libris”
Drawing attention to the developments and the influence of movements and forms after the 19th century, Denli said; “With changing technology and writing styles, we observed that this ornamental approach gradually disappeared in the late 19th century. We also observe that it was influenced by the movements and forms of the period. We thought these continued for quite some time, closely following the period, but we found that was not the case. In my studies, I revealed the richer aspect. While pictorial elements reflected the era, this was not much considered in the writing style. The lack of rapid developments in writing throughout history can also be shown as a reason for this. However, art forms have influenced ex libris.” he added.
“Ex Libris, a scientific field of study in Germany”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaya, explaining her ex libris studies and applications in Germany, stated; “The aim of the master's thesis ‘Ex Libris in Germany from Past to Present’ is to investigate how the art of ex libris has changed and developed in Germany throughout its historical process, from its inception to the present day. In Germany, ex libris has been examined not only as a collector's item but also as a scientific field of study. Within the scope of the thesis, ex libris works were exhibited at the HAWK/ Hildesheim stand at the Leipzig Book Fair, under the supervision of Dip. Des. Paul Kunofski. Thus, I thoroughly examined the development of ex libris art in Germany.” she concluded.
“I have works predominantly using original printing techniques”
Ismail Aslan, providing information about his work in this field, said; “I have created many examples to encourage people interested in this art form. I have works designed visually, predominantly using original printing techniques.” he stated.
