Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, Department of Visual Communication Design, organized an event titled “Being an Artist in the Game Industry.” The session brought together students interested in game art and illustration and featured Concept Artist and Illustrator Yağız Kani as the guest speaker. Kani shared valuable advice with students on portfolio preparation, developing a personal artistic style, and the importance of discipline in creative production.

The event took place at the South Campus Fuat Sezgin Conference Hall with the participation of Prof. And Algül, Head of the Visual Communication Design Department, and many students.

“A portfolio is a showcase that tells who you are”

Sharing his own works and experiences, Yağız Kani emphasized the importance of portfolio preparation in a creative career. “A portfolio is a showcase that tells who you are,” he said. “You should present works that match the position and company you are applying to. This is what sets you apart and helps you build originality.”

“Drawing is not a talent, but a process”

Highlighting that drawing skills are not limited to innate talent, Kani underlined the importance of disciplined and analytical practice for artistic growth. “It is not about drawing ten hours a day and it is about working with the right analysis. Everything you draw should be a step that helps you move to the next level. Drawing is not a talent, it is a process,” he said.

“Companies seek original production”

Kani also advised students not to include AI-generated visuals in their portfolios, noting that companies have become increasingly selective about this issue. “Your portfolio should reflect your own creative production. AI-generated visuals do not represent you. Companies are looking for originality,” he explained.

The talk continued with a Q&A session. At the end of the event, students from the Animation and Cartoon Department presented Yağız Kani with handmade stickers as a token of appreciation. The program concluded with a certificate of appreciation and a group photo.
