“Cultural Structure Can Change the Age of Breast Cancer Onset”

The event, moderated by Lecturer Eda Yetimoğlu from Üsküdar Üniversitesi Pathology Laboratory Techniques Program, was attended by Prof. Dr. İbrahim Öztek, Head of the Pathology Department at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine, as a speaker.

“Cultural structure can change the age of breast cancer onset”

Öztek stated that the cultural structures of countries change the age range of cancer onset, saying, “In literature, it is most frequently encountered between the ages of 45-55. We are continuing the studies we have carried out for years and in our previous university assignments at Üsküdar Üniversitesi today. As a result of our studies, we found that breast cancer is most common among women in Turkey aged 61-70. Although the literature generally indicates a prevalence between 45-55, the most commonly used literature in our country is American literature. We see that there is much more breast cancer in America than in Europe. In Turkey, it is less than in these countries. We will discuss the reasons for these differences in due course, but for example, factors like age of marriage, fertility age, and breastfeeding age play a role. All of these have functions, and the age range changes according to these functions.”

“Lung cancer is currently in first place”

Prof. Dr. Öztek spoke about the types of fatal diseases; “Breast cancer constitutes 22% to 30% of all malignant tumors in women. We can also think of it this way: formerly, breast cancer was among the leading causes of death in both general human mortality and female mortality, but now lung cancer has come to the forefront for both women and men. Breast cancer is in second place for women, and prostate cancer is in second place for men. In third place is colon cancer, which occurs in both. It is beneficial for us to know these. So, when we talk about cancer, three or four types of cancer mostly threaten people in this way. For every hundred women, one man can develop breast cancer.”

“The approach of the physician and family members to the patient is very important”

Prof. Dr. Öztek stated that the approach of physicians and family members to the patient would be largely effective in treatment; “In society, technological and industrial development generally increases cancer cases. Throughout life, one in every 7-8 women develops breast cancer. 90% of breast cancer cases are painless. Thus, they are not easily noticed. Therefore, early diagnosis saves lives. The approach of the physician and family members to the patient is very important. A solution-oriented approach is necessary, such as ‘Yes, there is a tumor, but we will deal with this tumor as surgeons, oncologists, or other relevant physicians.’ Because this affects the patient. The patient enters a psychological crisis. In this regard, the doctor needs to give suggestions to the patient. Family members need to approach the patient lovingly and make them forget their illness by surrounding them with a circle of love.”
