Border and Identity Debated in Arthurian Narratives at Entangled Histories Seminar

The seventh event of the “Entangled Histories: Borders and Cultural Encounters from the Medieval to the Contemporary Era” seminar series, organized in cooperation with Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Communication and Insubria University, was held. At the event, the concept of border and themes of cultural identity in medieval Arthurian narratives were discussed. Speaking at the online event titled “Borderlands and Cultural Identities in Arthurian Narratives”, Jasmine Bria emphasized, drawing from Geoffrey of Monmouth, that borders in Arthurian texts are not only geographical but also a field of cultural negotiation. 

The seventh event of the Entangled Histories – Borders and Cultural Encounters from the Medieval to the Contemporary Era seminar series, conducted in collaboration with Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Communication and the Media and Cultural Studies Program, was held under the title “Borderlands and Cultural Identities in Arthurian Narratives”.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör and participants from various professional groups specializing in the field gathered for the online seminar.

Border Spaces in Arthurian Narrative Tradition Examined 

Jasmine Bria, a speaker at the seminar, evaluated how border spaces and the construction of identity are shaped in the Arthurian narrative tradition, starting with Geoffrey of Monmouth. 

Emphasis Placed on Borders Being Not Only Geographical but Also a Field of Cultural Negotiation

Bria highlighted that borders are not only geographical but also a field of cultural negotiation, based on Arthur's struggle around Loch Lomond with the Scots and Picts who collaborated with the Saxons.

Seminar Series to Continue Until Summer…

It was stated that the seminar series, organized by Dr. Maria Pia Ester Cristaldi, Faculty Member at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Communication, Department of New Media and Communication, and Elisa Ramazzina from Insubria University, is set to continue until the summer months, open to public participation.
