Students from Üsküdar University's Communication Faculty, returning with 4 awards from the 31st Young Communicators Competition organized this year by the Turkish Journalists' Association and Aydın Doğan Foundation, had won 4 awards in the categories of “website”, “internet media site”, “blog”, and “interview”. The award-winning students and their lecturers were guests at the university's regular weekly Senate Meeting, held via Zoom.

“There are no losers in competitions”
Üsküdar University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan began his speech by thanking all the lecturers and students; “There are no losers in competitions; either you win, or you learn something. Even unsuccessful projects always teach new things. What matters is for individuals to demonstrate performance. I congratulate our Communication Faculty for its high performance. One of the most important secrets to their success is undoubtedly our lecturers and students being able to form good teams. They also succeed beautifully in making their work visible. We support our young colleagues to continue with the same motivation and enthusiasm. I am very happy when I see our Üsküdar Haber newspaper; there's a lot of effort put into it. This kind of work is very important for the future of our young people.”

“Competition participations encourage students”
Stating that they have been participating in the Young Communicators and TRT Future Communicators competitions for 3-4 years, Communication Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör said; “Looking at our success in the Young Communicators Competition this year, we rank first among foundation universities and high among state universities. Our lecturer Süleyman and his students achieve success in competitions by doing good work at Haber Üsküdar. Our lecturer Nihal has won first place in both competitions for the last two years. We will also form a committee for competitions and work to include students in competitions in every category. We will take more professional steps, as these are very encouraging initiatives. Opportunities from the industry also arise for award-winning students. Exchanging ideas and developing our relationships with the institutions organizing the competitions is also very valuable,” she stated.
“We are the communication faculty that produces the most news”
Üsküdar University New Media and Journalism Department Head Süleyman İrvan stated that they encourage students to produce news in news workshops and classes, and that they are the communication faculty that produces the most news, adding that sending good works to competitions increases students' motivation.

626 students' dreams came true
Stating that they produced three projects in three years, namely ‘Migrating Lives’, ‘Women Touching the Sun’, and ‘News from the Sun’, Üsküdar University Advertising Department faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nihal Toros said: “We won first prizes with all these projects. With my 4 students, we became a team. With our last project, News from the Sun, we met with teachers and mukhtars in provinces with challenging physical and geographical conditions like Ağrı, Siirt, and Van. First, we wanted to fulfill the dreams of the students there. The students drew their dreams, and their teachers sent them to us. With over 400 sponsors, we fulfilled the dreams of 626 students. We provided clothing support to some, and there were students who ate pizza for the first time, rode an elevator for the first time, and went to a shopping mall for the first time. With this project, we first received an award from TRT. Our students donated the prize money to a school in Ağrı. All of this is very valuable to us. This year, we will also have a project called ‘Kadın Başına’.”
Research assistants Atilla Erdemir and Selin Maden, who supported the students participating in the competition, stated that they were proud of their students.
Award-winning students Zeynep Şahin, Ceyda Er, Nilay Soysev, Rozerin Özbay, Merve Şahin, Emre Sertdemir, and Dilan Dilber Duran, on the other hand, thanked their lecturers, stating that they had a very enjoyable process and were very happy.
