A new academic year orientation program was held for 4th-year students of Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine. Within the scope of the program, topics such as introduction to clinical rotations and expectations, preparation for specialty exams, and transition from preclinical to clinical were discussed. Department academics provided information and answered students' questions at the orientation program, which garnered significant interest.

Within the scope of the program held at the Ibn-i Sina Auditorium, 4th-year medical students were informed. The opening speeches of the program were delivered by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur. Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Arif Aktuğ Ertekin and department academics also participated in the program.

Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak: "Medicine is not a profession, it is a lifestyle"

Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak, emphasizing that a person who does not love people cannot be a good physician, said: "Medicine is a profession based on human love. Without human love, this profession cannot be practiced. You can be a good scientist, but the moment a patient enters the picture, you have to be a good physician. To develop both your scientific side and your contact with the patient. For this, a person who does not love people cannot be a good physician. Medicine is not a profession, it is a lifestyle. You must gain self-confidence. You can achieve this with what you know and what you will learn. By not being afraid of the patient. When a patient comes, think of them not just as a patient, but also as an issue to be solved."

Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur: "Do not neglect to be a good person while becoming a clinician of the clinic"

Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, telling students to command respect as human beings within the clinic, said: "When you go to the clinic, there are things I especially want to emphasize. First, command respect as a human being within the clinic. Start by being a good person. Don't fight with anyone. You are in a crowded and busy place, you have to protect patient privacy. You should never share the secrets of privacy entrusted to you. Secondly, there should be no ethical violations. Try to be a good physician. When applying the knowledge you have acquired, consider the people around you. How does one act when treating a patient or how does one make an offer to the patient when saying 'open your back'? Do not hurt your patients and their relatives. Do not neglect to be a good person while becoming a clinician of the clinic."

Prof. Dr. Arif Aktuğ Ertekin: "Touching the patient is very different"

Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Arif Aktuğ Ertekin gave a presentation on "Medical Ethics and Patient Rights". Ertekin said: "Preclinical and clinical are a bit different. You applied the theoretical trainings you received in the laboratory, but going to the hospital and touching the hospital, touching the patient, is very different. The moment you put on a lab coat, you are a doctor, people will perceive you directly as such. It is a process that is both beautiful, enjoyable, and brings a little more responsibility. Medicine sometimes remains between ethics and law. Ethics comments on the teachings you should follow in this profession and your way of life. Law, on the other hand, thinks more about what you should not do, concepts like 'What do you do to commit a crime? What punishment do you get?'"

Internship flow was discussed

4th Year Coordinator Prof. Dr. Nilgün Tekkeşin, addressing the topic of "Introduction to Clinical Rotations and Expectations" under two subheadings, discussed the structure and processes of clinical rotations, as well as expectations and responsibilities of students. Tekkeşin stated: "There are two main units for the internship flow: surgical and internal medicine areas. Within the internal medicine area, we have internal diseases, child health and diseases, mental health and diseases, and a radiodiagnostic unit within the 4th year. Within the surgical units, we have general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and anesthesia and reanimation branches. We will complete the internships for these branches within an approximately 21-week training period. These are divided into different weekly segments. We have 9-week, 6-week, 3-week, 2-week, and 1-week training programs. Within the 9-week program, internal diseases and child health diseases will be covered. In the 6-week program, we have general surgery and obstetrics and gynecology. The 3-week program includes mental health diseases. The 2-week program covers anesthesia and reanimation. The 1-week internship program will be in the radiodiagnostic field."

Prof. Dr. Cemal Onur Noyan: "Flexible thinking skills should be acquired to manage stress"

Prof. Dr. Cemal Onur Noyan from NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi gave a presentation titled "Stress Management and Mental Health Support". Noyan said: "Stress and crisis are indispensable parts of our lives. They will happen every minute, every moment. As physicians, we must be a little more experienced in intervening during moments of stress and crisis that we experience. Because you will be in positions where everyone expects something from you, and hopes for your help. A crisis can be anything, unexpected and newly developing events. An unexpected event in your life might be a crisis for you. Crisis is variable. Knowing how to act and manage during a crisis is very important. The skill we need to acquire to manage stress is actually flexible thinking. If we can think flexibly and aim to cope with our angular characteristics and sharp edges, we can somehow deal with the crises and problems we experience."

Prof. Dr. Sait Keleş: "Medical education is both science and art"

Prof. Dr. Sait Keleş, who gave a presentation on "Career Planning and Preparation for Specialty Exams", said: "To become a doctor, we need to get a good education in this field. We will learn what we need to learn well, and we will have done what we need to do completely. Afterwards, we will be loaded with knowledge. Medical education is both science and art. A physician exists to heal, to treat, to feel for the other person. You need to make your career plan. What do I want to be? You must set a goal for yourself. I want you to know that it is now very difficult to change your status with medicine. Everyone knows their own abilities. Where do your inclinations lie? What do you love more? I recommend you make your choice accordingly."

Prof. Dr. Tayfun Uzbay: "Have respect for your profession"

Rector's Advisor Prof. Dr. Tayfun Uzbay, who informed students on "Research Opportunities and Clinical Research," stated: "Medicine is an education that holds a special place among all branches and all trainings. This began with human history. In ancient times, those who provided medical assistance or practiced medicine were the most sacred value. Have respect for your profession. There is a very important topic you need to know in pharmacology. It forms the basic philosophy of pharmacology. Placebo... The placebo has a neurobiological basis, a reality. The placebo has another characteristic. The placebo is a large area of abuse. These do not undergo serious research. They are constantly tried to be marketed in the background. Medicine never forgives."

Information was provided about UÇEP

Prof. Dr. Aptullah Haholu, who gave a presentation titled "Transition from Preclinical to Clinical (Assessment within the Scope of UÇEP)", said: "There are 128 Faculties of Medicine in our country. 91 of these are in state universities, and 37 are in foundation universities. Most are located in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. There are 30 Faculties of Medicine in Istanbul, 13 in Ankara, and 8 in Izmir. What path should be followed in terms of fostering common knowledge or common skills? For this purpose, Ministry of Health officials and university officials came together and developed the National Core Education Program in Medicine (UÇEP). These are studies that have been ongoing since 2001. In UÇEP, there are certain codes that determine your attitude and performance level towards a disease you learn, you will definitely learn these."

The main objectives of medical education were discussed…

Prof. Dr. Teoman Benli made evaluations on "Introduction to Clinical Rotations and Expectations". Benli said: "The main objectives of medical education are correlation, consistency, being well-defined, being based on current sources, and measurability. That is, it is important that any information between symptoms and clinical findings is not subject to arbitrary interpretation, but is based on facts, clearly defined, supported by a high level of evidence, and measurable."

After the Q&A session, the event concluded with a group photo.
