Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (SHMYO) Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program organized an event titled “Current Scoliosis Orthosis Design in Prosthetics and Orthotics”. The event discussed the three-dimensional structure of scoliosis, modern 3D brace designs, and radiological and clinical evaluation methods used in diagnostic processes. It also addressed how evolving technology transforms professional practices and how personalized dynamic braces improve treatment outcomes.

The event, held at Üsküdar University Çarşı Campus, was moderated by Instructor Kübra Akkalay, Head of SHMYO Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program.

Ortotist Prosthetist Ömer Faruk Çiftçi was a guest at the organized program.

Ömer Faruk Çiftçi: “We must not forget that we need to correct this disease in three dimensions”

Ortotist Prosthetist Ömer Faruk Çiftçi, stating that scoliosis is a three-dimensional condition, explained that correct pressure should be applied to the spine from different directions in brace design. Çiftçi; “When designing a brace, we must not forget that scoliosis is a three-dimensional disease and that we need to correct this disease in three dimensions. For example, while applying pressure with the three-point principle in the coronal plane, we must leave some empty spaces in the brace to effectively manage derotational forces. As the patient breathes inside the brace, their lungs should expand, and the spine should widen into those spaces. Only in this way can we reverse the patient's rotation and better correct the 'hump' formations,” he said, emphasizing the importance of dynamic brace design.

“Treatment success increases by 65 percent in informed patients”

Çiftçi pointed out that when intensive brace treatment is explained correctly, the success rate increases by around 65 percent; “Scoliosis is a long-term process. We shouldn't think that we put on the brace and will recover and take it off in a few months. That's why we have to manage families' expectations correctly from the start. Research shows a very striking truth. There is a world of difference between a patient who just comes with a prescription and wears a brace, and a patient whom we spend half an hour explaining scoliosis, its relationship with growth, and the treatment on the first day. The brace maker is the same, the physician is the same, the technical outcome is the same... Only thanks to that half-hour of information we provide at the beginning, treatment success increases by 65 percent in informed patients. This is exactly where the power of communication lies,” he said.

At the end of the event, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Ortotist Prosthetist Ömer Faruk Çiftçi.

The event concluded after a group photo session.
